I purchased a MediaStor CRW-5232. Put it in my PC - the BIOS sees it, and the XP shows it as a CD read/write - but it won't read any disks - I can put known good CDs in it and it just says "Please Insert a disk" - or something like that.

Put it in a different system running Windows ME - it shows it as a Compact Disk device, - get the same message - it can't see known good CDs. I've tried putting different disks in, data, music. Also, I've tried connnecting it to primary & secondary IDE - setting it up on both controllers as master w/ hard drive slave, slave w/hard drive master - and using cable select. Also set it up as master on Secondary IDE (no other device).

Do I have a bad CD burner?

I don't think I haver any packet writing software. I've tried this device in 2 different systems w/ 2 different operating systems - XP & Windows ME.

The BIOS sees it and identifies it correctly. I have PnP enabled in the BOIS setup. I didn't run an install program or anything, Does it need special drivers to function?

I've got a Sony burner that I put in the same XP machine, and it worked right away, all I did was physically hook it up and it worked in XP as soon as the system booted up.
