I would go for a NEC's drive, since i'm a die-hard fan + i'm sure new firmware would improve its performance as well as reliability

Thanks for the opinions guys.

I think I'll go for the NEC 3500A and hope for the best regarding the +R booktype setting. And also the Liteon DVD reader.

TDK 1616n has also editor's choice and so the NEC 3500A i think

after reading endless opinions, reviews, forums and giving it alot of thought - i think im gonna go with the NEC 3500 (aswell). cant wait for the review - the TDK 1616N helped though. gonna get it this weekend. i'll post my freedback once ive taken it for a test run. thanks for all the help - much appreciated!

good choise my friend. Considering that you can always apply tdk firmware, you can always rename the nec drive to tdk, if future tdk firmware releases proove to be better

i see. so i can apply TDK (1616N) firmware to the NEC 3500? is this advisable? will it remove the 'rip-lock'? also, if i apply an un-offical firmware can i rollback or flash with an offically firmware at a later date?

Yes, you can apply TDK 1616N firmware with no problem... but this will not remove riplock.

You can apply any unofficial firmware you want, and you can always rollback to any version (unofficial or official) you like. All you have to do is use the Dos Flasher...
