Could someone let me know what type of burner I need in order to burn MPEG 2. I have a Toshiba DVD-Rom SD-R2002. I can't get good quality VCD with the MPEG 1. The pixels get spread out and the video looks bad.

It probably has less to do with your burner, and more to do with the way the VCD was encoded. I would try using a program called DVD2SVCD. It is freeware and a Google Search will locate it for you. I make some SVCDs that are GREAT! Try it......

Consensus seems to be in the encoding. I used TMPGenc as the encoder to make this VCD. Is this a poor encoder?

TMPGEnc works very good. Maybe the source was not very good?

It could have been the settings too, TMPGEnc is very powerful and has a lot of options that can make or brake the movie. I like using guides from http://www.vcdhelp.com/ they're pretty good!

I think that Cinemacraft is better, but TMPGEnc will do mare. And i think it works better as a stand alone. But i use DVD2SVCD to make my SVCDs and it uses Cinemacraft by default, and it makes an outstanding SVCD.....

Yep that is only way to do things if you have no DVD recorder

Make sure you use CCE 2.50 though, newer/older versions are not as good.

DVD2SVCD with CCE 2.50 would have to be the best combination for making SVCD's. Easy to use for newbies and configerable for the advanced users.

TMPGEnc is by far the best encoder for VCD but unless you set the Motion Serach Precision to "Highest Quality (Very Slow)" then your wasting your time.

A simple to use altenative for the real newbie or anyone who wants a one click conversion, is to use EazyVCD as it uses TMPGEnc to make both VCD or SVCD (even XVCD or XSVCD).

Canopus Procoder is probably better than both those above but costs heaps and is SO DARN SLOW its just not worth using.

This is true Chickenman. And by the way it is nice to see you here. Always good to have one of the experts here. I go to you when I have problems with SVCDs and VCDs myself. This guys knows how to do it guys, answered more than one of my stupid questions! LOL........
