I asked Plextor (email) if there will be a utility in the near future which alow us to change the booktype. Today I recieved an answer. According to Plextor bitsetting/booktypesetting is not a part of the bookstandards. Therefor there will NEVER be such utility. As a matter a fact Plextor made it impossible to do in their firmware.

Yes, that sounds like the 712 drive is definitely worth that premium price they charge for it.

Ask that and got same answer. As long as it is no part of any booktype there will be no such utility and will it be blocked in the drives ROM. So it can't be done through firmware upgrade.

I think can be done with firmware upgrade, the question here is why Plextor doesn't adopt this...

It's like trying to get blood out of a stone with them and officially adopting un-standardized utilities. Plextor follow the CD/DVD standards very strictly. This is an example how this policy can be a downfall in a sitaution as this.

I disagree, Plextor only follows the standards when it suits them. Think about their 8x burner (708a) and 12x burner (712a) writing strategys, both are non-standard... of course 12x is not a real standard in any case anyways

I know it's off-topic but do I have the 2 years RMA-service if I buy a bulk/oem-version or must I buy a retailversion?

Maybe Plextor will support bitsetting when/if they release DL...

Like Pioneer did with the A08. I would not purchase a Plextor DL recorder if they do not, at least, make the written +R9 automatically a DVD-ROM booktype..
