I would definitely recommend Media Player Classic as well, it is very good.
Another freeware solution is VideoLAN

Links for the above
MPC
VideoLAN

Thanks. Despite some small bugs and quirks (I understand its still a development project), it has the best, most theatre like 3d multichannel movie sound I have heard yet for my nforce2 digital optical soundstorm system.

After downloading and installing the codec paks from http://www.megacodecpack.com/ which also contains Media Player Classic, I noticed that my Windows Media Player 9 now also uses the AC3filter codec that the codec pak contained. Now WMP9 also plays multichannel sound correctly, so that was the basic thing that was needed.

Last time I tried few players, VideoLAN (still) refused to co-operate. Tried several versions, none worked... so I'm thru with it. Hopefully MPC don't give me such a grief, as I want to find one player which can handle most (if not all) types of media files I'm using.

Sorry. Reply took some time, because my primary PC died.

Just installed to this space PC. Works, but playing is sometimes "unsure".
For example, when I adjust sound (or even move mouse from bottom control bar) when playing
at full screen, playing may stutter or even stop completely. Quick solution is to move mouse to
bottom control bar... and up again, repeating if one time don't fix this.

Oh, well... I can live with that... some time.

I think that's the best you're gonna get out of "freeware" "shareware"
