hey all, i just bought an optorite 8x multi format dvd writer. after reading some reviews about diferent drives im starting to get interested in how the drives select their diferent working speeds.

most drives start to write on the media at a low speed, and jump to a higher speed once they reach a set point on the media. this is very unnefficient as there are usually only 4 diferent speed steps the drive uses.

0-12min write with 8x
12-24min write with 16x
24-40min write with 24x
40-end write with 32x

those speed settings are set in the firware right? is it possible to change those setting, or add extra settings? so the drive constantly writes faster the further the head leaves the center of the media? a perfect curve is not possible with most drives as the hardware doesnt support it, but is it possible to set more settings like:

0-6min write with 8x
6-12min write with 12x

so by adding one more step the average writing speed increases, and both the drive and media should support it.

is it possible?

Actually the Optorite 8X has changed writing strategy with the latest firmware from Z-CLV to P-CAV, other people might help with such firmware patching issues...
