I am looking for some users who use their DVD writers to author home videos from D8 or DV. I recently purchased the Samsung SHW08AEN dual format (??) writer and have had no luck burning an authored DVD-R of home videos. Also, backups of DVDs, all of which were able to be burned on my work Pioneer A05, contained write or disc errors from the Samsung. I used DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter, even burned in ISO format, and all were screwed up.

Does anyone know of a good DVD dual format that is known to allow authoring of both DVD+R and DVD-R in 8x with no faults?? I am considering the NEC 2500 or the TDK 880N.

I think the problem here might be the used media, the Pioneer A06 is a fine dual recorder, even i don't think its currently sold at the market, the NEC 2500A has also good writing quality

I should have mentioned that I used several different brand names: Ritek, Meritonline, Memorex, Pioneer.
Some specs from dual format writers do mention that DVD-R is recommended for general discs, and the Samsung website even mentioned in a note that they do not recommend DVD-R for authoring.

I would like to be able to transport my burner to work, brother's house, etc.

What is the difference between Nec 2500 and Nec 2500A.

I have seen one on Komplett. It says OEM. Does that mean no drivers with it. If so are they easy to get?

Cause it cannot backup 100% especially SafeDisc based games due to the used chipset

Hi there,
I'm choosing between NEC 1200a or a Pioneer DVR-A07XLA.
Now I'm sure there both great burners, but one thing has got me
considering the Pioneer, and thats the bundle software that comes
with it.
The Pioneer is bundle with:
Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3 SE Suite:
Ulead Video Studio 7 SE:
Ulead DVD Picture Show SE:
DVD-lab:
TMPGEnc MPEG1/2 + DOLBY AC-3 Audio Encoder:

I consider TMPGnc and DVD-Lab to be pretty handy, but have no idea
what the Ulead burning software is like. I normally use Nero to burn cds.
(This is going to be my first DVD burner.)
Does anyone care about what software comes with the drive ?
Should I be taking this in to consideration ?

Ulead is probably software for DVD Authoring, should be quite easy, even haven't used it personally, usually the software that comes with the drive isn't really the basic criteria to buy the drive, unless its something special

So Emperor any reason not to go for the Pioneer drive ?
I'm mainly doing backups of data, backup of dvds and would like to play the
dvd backups on my Xbox. (Which has a Samsung drive. )

Not really, unless that NEC 2500A seems to have better writing quality and maybe also upgradable with Double Layer +R media
