Thanks John.

I assume since we're talking about the firmware in this thread that this OWSC is part of the firmware in revision 1.0c. I just checked the Yamaha web site and they have a 1.0d version.

They (Yamaha)cautions:

"Added 24x and 32x writing.
*"Optimum Writespeed Control" option needs to be disabled. "

Exactly how does one turn this feature on and off?

I have also looked at the 1.0d firmware update but have been afraid to install it as it says turn off DMA mode. My Dell is in Ultra DMA mode and the only other option I have is PIO. The computer takes about 5 minutes to boot in this mode. How did the rest of you upgrade your firmware?

There are a couple of ways to accomplish this. Yamaha does however suggest that you change to PIO mode, then reboot, and flash the drive, then switch back to DMA and reboot again.

You can also boot windows in safe mode and flash the drive, it accomplishes the same thing.

There are some good changes in 1.0d firmware, write speeds of 24X and 32X have been enabled (with OWSC off - as suggested by Yamaha for those speeds) and alot of new media's have been added to the 1.0d firmware. It is safe to flash to this firmware.

Thank you I will try it in safe mode. I didn't now that I could do that. Mine is cable select and In the system panel says UDMA mode 2 on one and mode 5 on the other.

If you arn't sure then change them all to PI0, it might take a while to boot up, but you only have to do it once. When you're finished the flash, change it back to DMA and you're set. Better safe then sorry right?

MP3Mogul, Thanks I changed it all to PIO mode and then flashed. It shows up as 1.0d in Nero so must have done it right. Thanks for the help.

My Yama F1E came with FW=1.0c. I flashed it to 1.0d with Auto Insert Notification of all the flavors disabled (WinXP PRO) but Direct Memory Access still enabled. No any consequences so far: everything appears and works as the doctor prescribed.
I can't recommend, however, flush the firmware with DMA enabled. Nonetheless it seems to be possible. Just an info.

All you have to do to get a good Flash is to read the Instructions file that comes with the upgrade and follow it fully and you will have no problems with a sucessfull upgrade !!!
