It is made possible because compaines (such as Lite-On) design a CD-RW drive for optimum write speed of say 48X (LTR-48125W).
They can then use the basis of this drive to make it a 24X, 32X and 40X writer just by installing a firmware which recognises the drive as an LTR-32125W and 40125W.
Then it's much less cost to make one drive and just install different firmware and put different stickers on the top of it and different speed logos on the front bezel (32x12x40x, 40x12x48x, 48x,12x48x...)
Then they sell the 48X for more, because it is faster when in actual fact the 32X is the same as the 48X inside, just has the firmware limiting it

.
This is only possible with same writers/models namely Lite-On drives, "3" and "5" series MediaTeK chipsets...

Can I buy any 24 speed writer and upgrade it?
No you cannot just buy any drive and make it faster.
quote:
How about a writer that's sold as a 16 speed...? What speed can I upgrade it to?
A 16X writer *can possibly* be upgraded, depending on the make/model.
quote:
I've got another writer, a Ricoh 2o speed writer, can I update this!?
Possibly, try looking here and if your model number matches, you could! (*all attempts to OC is done at the users own risk!*)
quote:
Is there any danger in updating to a faster speed?
With some drives that were not designed for such high-speed, yes you could wear out your drive quickly and it could malfunction. Others which use the exact same hardware (Lite-On's LTR-32125, 40125 and 48125) there is no risks to my knowledge!
quote:
AND if I want to write at 40 speed... where do I get the discs from? Or can I use my old 24 speed CD?
You will need high speed, good quality media to write at faster speeds. You can find these CD-R/RW's at local shops etc... You can try using your old CD's, as these may be compatible with 40X/32X writing
