There are so many people telling you ,including us, to OC your LiteOn 40x up to 48x. However real life tests, and not just CD Speed writing graphs shows that the drive cannot actually burn more than the 40x-41x writing speed. In addition the disabling of "Smart-Burn" doesn't seem to work (not sure if the problem lies upon the software or hardware) and in addition we had 3 coasters!

Even with CD Speed we managed to get easily 48x recording speed with two types of media (Philips, Hitachi Maxell) with real life recording test results are much different. Nero doesn't allow more than 40x for the Philips media but permits 48x for SKC and Noname Plasmon.

Here are what the Nero CD Speed shows with various media (maximum writing speed)

a) Write Errors all the time: SmartBuy (made by Prodisc) 80min 32x

b) 32x maximum writing speed (P-CAV):
Noname Plasmon Silver 80min
MitsuBishi Chemicals 80min 24x

c) 40x maximum writing speed (P-CAV):
Mitsui 80min 40x
SKC 80min 24x
Taiyo Yuden 80min 32x & 40x
Prodisc 80min 32x
Mitsubishi Chemicals 80min 40x

d) 48x maximum writing speed (CAV)
Philips (made by Ritek) 80min 40x
Hitachi Maxell 80min 40x
Imation 80min 32x (sometimes with problems)

Now lets pass to REAL life recording speeds:

- Selected 40x recording speed
Philips 80min 40x at 40x (SmartBurn On): 5:10
Mitsui 80min 40x at 40x(SmartBurn On): 3:02
Taiyo Yuden 80min at 40x (SmartBurn On): 3:06
SKC 80min at 40x (SmartBurn On): 3:21
Prodisc 80min at 40x (SmartBurn On): 3:05

So best result is 3:02...LG P-CAV made same task in 3:06 so small gain in speed.

- Selected 48x recording speed
SKC 80min at 48x (SmartBurn On): 2:52
Noname Plasmon 80min at 48x (SmartBurn Off): 3:09

This time the drive worked with the SKC media better and gave 2:52mins for a full 80min disc. What we have noticed with many media is that the drive when reaches 40x recording speed (around 70%) and tries to move on, stops recording for few seconds, re-starts and finishes the burn. The CD works ok, but this shows that the laser is not powered enough to proceed above 40x. Also we noticed that during the lead-out area the drive again makes much time to end.

The good news is that the writing quality of burned discs is good (even to those which the recording stopped and the re-started). No C2 errors noticed and C1 seems good. Of course we had 3 coasters but it was expected after all when making OC

We don't know if the above problems are from the VS01 firmware and not from the hardware, even usually the first LiteOn firmware includes many bugs.

Your test results would be appreciated!

Just wanted to drop a line and say the forums on cdfreak have VS02.bin to download. Just flashed my drive with it, before I could only burn my TDK discs at 40x with the first firmware(VS01) now with (VS02) I can burn them at 48x. I hope you do some more testing with this new VS02 firmware thanx again!

My Imation 32x CDs said they were good for 48x as well, but they crapped out long before (the burn actually failed). Doing an analysis of the CD showed an extreme number of errors towards where it stopped burning. Doh.

My 32x Memorex (made in Japan...Taiyo Yudens, correct?) won't go over 40x, and they seem to be OK (though Nero locked up once on me when doing the lead out of a CD).

Time to check out VS02

Upgraded to VS02. Just burned a 697MB DivX movie in 3 minutes even :) That's at 40x which is the max my Memorex CDRs will support.

My Vs02.BIN let me burn a disk with CloneCd that passed 49X with Smart Burn turned off. It did the same thing in Speedread.

I also thought you'd like to know that I did this exact same burn with the VS01 firmware (32x Memorex CDR burned at 40x). The results were 68.45% good sectors, 31.55% damaged sectors. The errors were roughly in the same area as the above pictures shows (right in the middle of the disc...any ideas why they would be there?).

An interesting thing to note, though, is that the VS01 CD only showed 228005 errors versus the 985838 errors shown by the VS02 CD. Roughly 1/4 the errors with the older firmware.

Yeah VS02 seems more 'buggy' than VS01.

John I have not encounted these problems you speak of, well except at high speed recording the Nero buffer always seems to run out sometimes, causing SMART-Burn to enable, thus slow down my record time...
I am not running anything I wasn't before, strange. Maybe bug in Nero or both firmwares

Anyways going to buy a LTR-40125W and see how that goes at 48X write!

BTW, my recording times in CCD for a full 700MB/80min Cd are around 2:30mins, CCD also reports 49X recording at the end...

I can confirm that VS02 produces coaster mania with several media and works better with other media.

Still not so sure if the LTR-40125S hardware can manage the 48x recording speed

I have upgraded my LTR 40125s to LTR 48125w, however, everytimes, I use nero burning to burn the image. It either stopped at lead in region, or leadout region at end of burning. my nero revision are 5.5.8.2. I have tried to reinstall the programe and reflash the cd-writer. It has not solved the problem. the same problem occurs at the clonecd 4.013. could anyone can help me to solve the problem. I learnt that there is firmware VS02, but I donot know where can i download it. I would like to try the newewr firmware, to see whether it solves the problem
