I'm yet another person having problems with the cdd 4801 burner. I did the aspi magic file fix and the firmware update to 2.5. Windows xp generates no errors and says the drive is working fine. I've checked the driver file page and their doesn't seem to be any errors there. Any other ideas????????

Sorry to anounce my Phillips CDRW800 passed away. Is the 4th in the company, non of them had more then year and half. We called the supplier. He said he had 10 of them returned with the same problem. Seems that the productfails after a while. We have other 3 working in this moment. We called Phillips service and they said that it is normal. Thet they are not aware of this problem.

We will never buy a Phillips, lack of quality control. Poor after sales service.

Could anyone suggest a better brand with no problems.

Thanks.

ĄDO NOT BUY PHILLIPS CD BURNER!

Laffin Assassin, sorry to be another person asking for the
magic 249k patch, but I have a problem with a PCRW804 too!

It was working (this is at work), but my PC was getting a bit
messed up, so it was recloned. After recloning the drive would
no longer write CDs. I transferred it to another PC with several
OSes on to see if I could encourage it to work, without luck.
I followed the Philips procedures under Win 98 to flash it,
and no the tray won't even open!

I'd rather be using it under Win XP or Linux than Win98, but
anything is better than the current situation!

(Btw I changed the drive setting from slave to cable select -
could this be a problem on these very unruly drives?)

Thanks

First of all, thanks to everyone here, especially Laffin Assassin, for this site.

Now to the problem...

I have a Compaq 7151WM running WinME (yes, I know M.E. sucks) with a Philips CDD4801 (PCRW804). It worked fine for playing and burning CDs ever since I bought the PC in 8/2001.

A week ago, I burned a couple music CDs with no problem. 5 days ago, I went to burn a CD, and my Easy CD Creator 4 software kept giving errors that my CD didn't have enough free space available. It was a new, blank CD from a pack that I had previously burned at least 50 disks with no problems. I kept removing one track at a time from the song list until I was down to one song, and still getting the "insufficient space" error. The software then started giving a message that I was not using a blank CD. The CD was/is definitely blank.

The CD-RW STILL PLAYS CDs great. It just won't recognize blank CDs to burn.

I've read through all the posts in this thread, and browsed several posts in other threads and other support forum sites.

I've cleaned the drive's innards with a PC duster compressed aircan,
Un-installed/re-installed the Easy CD Creator 4 S/W,
Upgraded to v.5 Easy Creator,
Uninstalled E.C. and installed Click & Burn Pro 2.0.
Removed and re-installed the drive,
Updated the ASPI,
Re-flashed the firmware,

None of these actions have resolved the problem, and I will NOT reformat my Hard Drive, or re-install/upgrade my Windows M.E. to troubleshoot this.

Is it time to buy a replacement CD-RW, or have I missed something else to try first?

Well, not that it appears too many folks are interested - based on the thundering slience in the wake of my previous posts, but I did go ahead and replace the Philips CD-RW with a CenDyne 48x12x48 at OfficeMax for $30 (after rebate). According to its liting under device manager, it's really a Lite-on LTR-48125W. It's fast, and will re-write, too. The Nero cd burning s/w bundled with the drive is version 5.5.8.0, and the install fails before copying all the files. I d/l'd and successfully installed the demo version of the Nero s/w (version 5.5.9.17). I'm able to burn CDs again - faster than ever before - but my system seem sluggish since loading the program and has blue-screened a few times. The Nero online manual, FAQs and other website resources are pretty worthless for troubleshooting.

Any advice would be appreciated. Sorry if this is not the correct thread for a Nero question.
