Hi there, I have the drive and I tried to update it's firmware from 1.01 to 1.04 under Windows XP (with a Dos boot disk).

I typed at the prompt: je3 je3lg409.hex <enter>

and it scanned my IDE channels and found my recorder. The first stage complete at 100%, BUT!! when in went onto the second stage (writing to OUTPUT FILE), it stopped at 44% and it simply said, "Could not write output file". This worried me. I tired it again and same thing happened.

I went under NERO (5.5.8.2) and check the firmware and it displayed 1.04. I was a little suspicious of this.

Has anyone tried the firmware update and ended up with the same results?
Is the 'output file' an important process in the firmware updating that i should worry about if it did not complete? (I have a feeling that output file is the file being sent to the recorder's bios).

help anyone?

You tried to upgrade the firmware from diskette? That's the problem we also had! Try re-update from the HD. The updater writes a file of 1.5MB long which doesn't fit in a diskette.

LG should had better instructions!!!

Yeah will do that, (somehow).

When I boot up from a WINDOWS XP-made bootdisk, it doesn't let me see any other drives other than A: at the prompt.

I'll try to make a 98 formatted bootdisk and I'll try it again.

I just purchaged an GCE-8320b, and was also wondering what the 1.04 firmware update does. I tried to burn 90min CD's with the latest nero, but he sees them as 80min. Has someone tried burning 90min on this model with the latest firmware?. Thanks in advance...:)

Had the same problem. I have XP that has not got a native DOS prompt, what so ever. So, shall I boot from a floppy, than run the update from the harddisc?
I am curious about Johns report, like other LG users.

Hmm that a problem. You should have to load DOS drivers to recognize the drive. Try get from a friend a WinMe bootable disc and run update from the HD

You have to make (if you are under XP and want to upgrade or overclock your LG burner) a RAMDISK drive (temporary memory drive).

1) but before you do, get a cdrewritebale and burn the firmware updates onto it.
2) make a DOS bootdisk with XP (I made one with WinME - sister's OS)
3) Go edit the "config.sys" and you should see a [CD] category and in there you should see:

devicehigh=ramdrive.sys /E '2048' (change the 2048 to something like 8048 - 8MB capacity for the ramdrive).

4) Also, do the same in the [NOCD] category just below (change the '2048' to 8048).

The reason why you have to change this is because the firmware update is larger than 2MB when uncompressing on the floppy disk. And this will result in an incomplete firmware flash.

5) Reboot the PC with the bootdisk and boot with CD-ROM support and you will notice that you're drive C: is 8MB (or your HDD letter). This is your memory drive. XP hides the hard drive on boot-up for some reason.

6) Copy the firmware files off the CD-rewritable into the 8MB C: drive.

7) now you are ready to flash off the C: (8MB) drive and follow the instructions from then on.

je3.exe xxx.hex

Couldn't you create a folder on root of C: (eg c:\lg), copy the .hex and the je*.exe file into that folder, then boot up with a startup disk then go into the c:\lg directory and execute from there?
This seems to be more straight-forward to me, unless i'm missing something.

Yeah it is a lot easier if you copy all the files into a folder on C: drive and boot with either Windows 98 or Windows Me boot disk and run it from the Hard-drive as some CD-Roms do not like you to have a CD in the driver when you are flashing them !

It's Nice to be Important!!!
But it's more Important to be NICE!!!
