Craig,
The chance of me moving the hardware to another system is zero at this time. Besides, taking out of or putting into WinXP runs the risk of bringing on the wrath of MS! Let me give you an update from episode 12 (last night).

- Downloaded & installed new version of Roxio. (I think release date was something like Oct 25th.)
- Attempted to burn 71 mins of music onto an Office Depot 80 min -R.
- Test burn ran fine.
- Error during 'real' burn of around track 10 (of 15 total tracks).
- Roxio's error log stated many possible reasons for the error, amongst them the media being used. Another suggested reinstalling Roxio's original version (Easy CD Platinum 5.0).

Nero's web site lists possible solutions for correcting these errors. However, after reading the solutions the one thing I walked away with is a sense that you should have a Win98SE system with *only* Nero running as the only software! LOL

I really think the one thing wrong these software companies is doing is writing multi-OS compatible code, including Windows Media. Write code specific for XP - not cross-compatibale with any other OS - and let's see what happens.
<sigh>

Hi Stephen,

Good for users, yes. Too much work for Engineers to have a seperate code for each OS.

I have a few other cusotmers who have contacted us directly testing. So far 2 of 6 have resolved their issue on another system and will remain there as they do not wish to deal with the issue. But they will be sending me information about the systems it would not work on. So that in itself may help us track down this elusive issue.

Regards,

Craig

I have a very interesting configuration. I have two HD installed in my PC: one with Win98SE and the other with WinXP. I can switch the operating systems via the BIOS. Currently I have 5.5.7.8 installed under Win98SE and 5.5.9.14 under WinXP.

Any Nero version greater then 5.5.7.8 doesn’t work with Win98SE; nevertheless, they worked already. Nero 5.5.9.14 and any other works fine with WinXP. As you can see, it is not a hardware problem, but a SW incompatibility problem instead.

When I first installed Win98SE, any versions of NERO were working. But at a certain point they stopped working. I’m not sure, but I believe that it stopped working after I installed MediaFace II (Neato SW for CD-cover design). This SW has the capability of reading CD-Text from audio-CD in order to generate the music index.

I’m available to do any test that you guys need in order to find out the problem.

It's not just the Win98 system itself, as many are using Nero succesfully on this OS, even with Nero 5.5.9.17

But Win98 could be part of the problem. Only this is not limited to the Win98 system so that kills that scenario. It would be nice if it only occured under Win98. It would really narrow down our testing and Q&A.

I had one customer resolve his issue today by using the 80pin IDE cable. He had an IDE bus that supported UDMA and needed the high end cables to get this to work properly.

But again, this is not a solution for everyone. [V]

So far we have found a number solutions causes and solutions, but that is not the end of it.

Causes and Solutions:
1) The High End IDE Cable is one of course
2) Older version of Nero did have this issue and an upgrade resolves it for a few
3) Poor Media has been found to cause this (common)
4) Old firmware on the recorder
5) Old Drivers loaded for the IDE Controller
6) Conflicting drivers from other recording software loaded on system

But there are a few who go through all this and still have the issue. Those are the ones we are trying to concentrate on, and which are very difficult to resolve, as we can not duplicate in our labs yet.

Regards,

Craig

I have same problem, my machine, Asus P2L97, IBM 13GB Hdd, prim partition Win98, secound partition Win2000, CD-R Pioneer 32x, CD-WR Lite-on 16101B.

Normally I'm using my Win98 partition, when I get the CD-WR it were delivered with Nero 5.0.4.6, this version working perfect, few months ago I upgrade to Nero 5.5.8.0, with these version I have made a lot of CD copies (from CD-R to CD-WR)without problems, but when I try to backup data files from Hdd to CD-WR the system hang with "SCSI/ATAPI command timeout error", I try to upgrade to Nero 5.5.10, same problem. Then I deinstall 5.5.10 and then install 5.0.4.6, then NO more problems.

I have tried to install 5.5.8.0 at my Win2000 partition, there are NO problem to do HDD to CD-WR copies

Hi everyone, [:p]

I have posted this issue in other topics already but found an astonishing similarity between our problems. I'm having trouble writing with any CDRW-software (but Nero is my primary software). It just plain stops at 1% whatever I do. Both testing and burning. HP CD-Record gives me the same message. Funny thing however: no error-message or report...the comp just freezes completely. [?]

I tried deleting the upper and lower filters in the regedit cuz I thought the configuration was jammed. Worked fine, the stuffed up again. What do you guys reckon?
I believe it's the way that the programs access the CDRW that subsequently causes this problem and all the above mentioned problems.

Hey, gang...I found a stupd fix to my errors.

I switched to using only TDK Certified+ CD-Rs. Alone that didn't make the fix. But when I went to putting ***less than*** 74 minutes of music on the disc, all seems well and works fine.

Maybe Plextor's 8/20 can't handle writing the additional time/space on the CD-R?

Stephen

I am having a similar error (scsi target error) with my *brand new* Panasonic LF-D321 DVD writer. I have tried simulating writing DVDs with Nero... They have all failed, about 93% (1 hour) into the simulation. It takes me an hour to determine that yes, it is still broken.

And no one has a solution. Only conjecture.

I have the latest everything (ASPI, BIOS, Firmware, Nero, Win2K Service Packs). Nothing helps. I am thinking of shipping the drive back to the manufacturer. Of course this will cost me shipping, and they will likely send me another drive that will have the same problems. It will be the most expensive christmas present I've ever gotten (a $220 dvd writer) that I will not be able to use. PLEASE HELP.

Same problem here. I can burn Audio CD and VCD, but I am having problem burning data over 30mb and make copy of data CD. I realized the problem from 5.5.9.x and 5.5.10.x. When I burn data CD, it just stop processing at certain percentage. I have tried different media and I have all the latest firmware, drivers and freshly installed XP Pro. I can use CloneCD to make copy. I have a Sony 1611 16x writer. I hope they can fix the bug soon.

Too many of you are getting carried away and assuming your issues are the same one discussed in the Original Email here. And this is clearly not the case. We are only talking about those systems where Nero is reporting a SCSI/IDE Error and even then only for those who have used the Trouble shooting steps I have mentioned here.

Those others, such as WLUK, clearly does not apply to this same issue. For WLUK, I would recommend trying our latets Nero 5.5.10.7 from our web site, but do a clean uninstall of your current Nero before installing it. And if you still have issues, send a copy of your Nero log file to techsupport4@nero.com. You clearly have other issues going on.

And ClintJCL, you have trouble with your IDE controller, and you should have DMA enabled for your Recorder, and you need to upgrade to a new release of Nero as you do have an older version.

And marcibrandenburg has trouble with any software as he mentions, not just Nero, which tends to point to a system problem or a Recorder problem, as those who have the SCSI/IDE Error with Nero have no trouble when using other Recording software.

Now TJDK shows the symptoms I would associate with a bug related to Nero, and he did correct in posting his problem here. TJDK should upgrade to our latest Nero 5.5.10.7 from our website, as I've sent this release to a few of our customers and this seems to have resolved their issues.

And last, Jcas offered his services to test any new release of Nero to see if it resolves the issues, and I would like to take you up on this offer and have you download our latest Nero 5.5.10.7 and see if this resolves your issue under Windows 98SE.

As a final thought, please take care where you post your problems, and do not just assume your issues are the same as anothers unless you have the Exact symptoms as the other person. Otherwise you end up mudding the waters for everyone and it makes it very difficult to trouble shoot and resolve the issue for you and for others. It causes everyone to look in the wrong direction for the solution to a problem.

Regards,

Craig

Stephensch: I have the same problem as yours. If you study your log file carefully, I think the most significant lines are the lines I quoted above (they are closest to the error); they are different than those of other posters here. I got the same errors in the log; namely, SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND followed by KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR (log attached below).

In my case, until two weeks ago everything was going fine, for the last six months I've been burning happily at 40x. Then suddenly, I started getting the errors mentioned here. Standard recommended tweaks (autorun=0, no dma) didn't help, even when I reduce burn speed to 8x. Can someone help? Stepehsch? Craig CCampbell?

Thanks

JackAren

JackAren:

First, you should upgrade to Nero 5.5.10.20 from www.ahead.de (don't forget an appropriate Language pack for help files!).

Second, try other media (recall that stephensch switched media as well).

Third, your log shows quite new versions of the Adaptec/Roxio drivers Cdr4_2k.sys and Cdralw2k.sys. Have you recently installed any Roxio's software, e.g., the CD burning plugin of WMP (Windows Media Player)? Sometimes Nero's problems are due to conflicts with such drivers. I can't say whether this holds in your case, but you could try to remove Roxio's drivers as indicated in section S11 of the InCD guide

http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=9997

If you need more info on the procedures outlined there, just ask!

KCK: Thank you for your help - it's been very helpful. I've implemented most of the suggestions; I'm going on a 3 day trip, so I can't do an extensive post; here is a summary:
1. I did install WMP 9 two months ago, and it seems it did do something in connection with the Roxio drivers; I de-installed them as described, including deleting the "Low Filters" and "High Filters". (Strange things happened when deleting registry keys, but that's for later).
2. I installed Nero 5.5.10.20 as an upgrade.
Results: Write errors still appear for speeds of 20x and higher (even though simulation succeeds 40x (-> down to 32x by PoweRec), and so does CD Speed). I've been succeeding to burn at 16x.
By the way - Nero Info Tool reports: "ASPI drivers missing" (yellow) for system, "ASPI OK" (green) for Nero".

Here's a typical failed burn log:

JackAren:

Glad to hear you have made some progress!

Your ASPI layer looks fine.

I would definitely try other media. Otherwise, apparently there is little you can do. I presume that your hardware configuration has not changed since the time when you didn't have problems, so there is no need for checking IDE cables, chipset drivers, etc.

Looking at your logs, I am wondering why the amount of free memory is so low. What other programs were you running together with Nero?

Do you really need Mode 2 and TAO? For data discs, I normally use Mode 1 and DAO (Disc At Once).

Let me just throw this into the woodpile.... I installed WMP 9 when it was first released for download, and I do not have any problems as above.
