I have a Lite-On CD-RW 16x10x40 LT-R16101B (Firmware: TS0W) and I'm using Win98 SE. After I installed Nero 5.5.8.0, I started having problems when burning data-CD. It always hangs after some minutes and stop writing (green light on). In very rare cases I receive an error message "SCSI/IDE timeout...", but generaly I have to hit reset switch to reboot my PC. The funniest is that I still can write Video-CD without any problem.

I reinstalled Nero 5.5.8.0 and 5.5.8.2 many times, updated the firmware from the driver and nothing worked.

I unchecked the DMA (although I'm sure my CD-RW driver supports DMA transfer) and insteady of freezen at 3%, it frooze at 61% of progress (I was burning ~600 Mbytes of data);

I reinstall 5.5.7.8, re-checked DMA and the burner is working again!

Can somebody help me or is having a similar problem?

Could you reinstall Nero 5.5.8.2, and send me a copy of the Nero log file from a write attempt with this release?

I need this before I can approach our Engineers with a possible bug report.

Regards,

Craig

Unfortunately no log file was generated when I tried to write a DATA-CD. The PC frooze and I had to push the reset key to re-boot the PC. After that the log file was empty.

Therefore, I wrote a Video-CD without any problem (that's weird: I can write Video-CD, but I cannot write Data-CD with 5.5.8.2). See below the NeroHistory.log file from the Video-CD session.

Could you try with the wizard off? I notice you have 0MB of free memory whild doing the operation. Nero should not use more than 70% of your Memory, not all of it. Do you have any other programs running in the background?

I solved my problem installing a new HD in my PC. After that I install Window 98SE (clean installation) and all other softwares.

I suppose that Nero 5.5.8.2 doesn't update or clean correctly its entries in the registry (?), since the problem happens only with the version 5.5.8.x. Even after I found out the problem, I was always able to work with the old version (5.5.7.8).

Just give a try to this,

Make an iso image of whatever u wanna write. If the image is created perfectly, u will be sure that there is no fault in the source data or the hard-disk.

Now write the iso image!

i think this will help!

I guess this should help!!!

nope, its definatly a bug, other people have the problem....

after testing most of the nero versions, the safest one that i can use without the writer hanging is 5.5.7.8 :(

NOThing else from that to .9.0 works......

Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.x.x.x is having the exact same problems. I use an "old' Plextor 8/20 and it + Roxio worked flawlessly on Win98SE. With the move to WinXP on a completley new Athlon based system, Roxio worked until I upgraded/updated the Roxio software to the last two versions.
I will include my log file at the end of my note. Suffice it to say Roxio hasn't responded to my inquiry. Plextor, OTOH, has been more than helpful! (And this support comes about 5 years after I purchased this PlexWriter 8/20! Can't beat that kind of support with a stick, can ya? LOL) Plextor's answer is as follows:
- - -
The error you get is a media error. The buffers info has nothing to do with your problem.
I'll bet you are trying to put more data on the disc than is possible, and by burning with a couple of fewer tracks it would work ok, or by using a different brand of disc.

Well, it can't be the media since I've been using the same type for years (Office Depot/Max, 50 or 100 bulk spindles, 80 mins since they came out with them). I've heard other's had great luck with Nero, so I switched to that and, like some of you, am getting the same types of errors. Here's the log file in case anyone cares to read it. The errors seem to creep in towards the end of the file, naturally.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Stephen

Hi Everyone,

We have been following this issue, and trying to isolate the cause, but it has been very difficult. As you can see from this list, it occurs with various formats. One of you has it with any format but Video, another has it when creating Video, and another gets this symptom when creating an Audio CD, etc. So the format being used does not appear to be the issue. So we are thinking it's something unique to these systems. Some sofware or hardware that Nero is having conflicts with.

For those who can, please do a little test for me. Take your Nero and Recorder to another Computer, and test there to see if Nero and your Recorder will work. And if it does work for you, could you get back to me with a list of Hardware or Programs the other computer has that this one does not. I'm hoping to get a response from 3 or more users, and see if I can not see something common in the systems that could be affecting our Nero software.

Regards,

Craig
