I'm having trouble with the recorder under Windows XP.. Its not being recognized as as burner even though it comes up listed as a CD-RW. I figured updating the firmware might help. I'm not having much luck there as the firmware update I found comes up with the message "software is not made for this computer.."

Any ideas?

Yes I could tell you how to "do" the 1.0p, if you insist..

But you can upgrade directly to the newest one, the 1.0s, which won't give you this prob, and it can be done from within Windows.
