A very interesting read and I hope option three becomes a reality real soon!

if Apple was all for open solutions why don't they open up iTunes tracks for other players?
Why don't they make their own ipods compatible with Rhapsody or Napster?
To me it is just propaganda - they want to get extra publicity their iphone did not manage to receive ;)

Well, without DRM, you can play your downloaded music on any device.  Until that day comes I am glad for QTFairUse6.
