Yes, I had already been playing with this, it isn't supported with the 4166b (YET), but I'm sure it will soon be!

Some people like to have a copy of the "original" firmware. This is why I mentioned 1.00 firmware.

Ununderstable in my opinion... Since v1.01 or 1.02 doesn't make problems, there's no need to "hold" an old copy of software / firmwares. ;)

Wow, today I had the first problem with my 4166b: I wanted to delete a cheap CD-RW: No chance... "Cannot follow the track.", Nero told me. Well... I should buy other CD-RWs then... ;)

Your 100% right, but if you want to locate the RPC part of firmware, it's more simple with two different firmwares (I hope rpc1.org and tdb have 1.00 and 1.01 firmwares ;) ). If ala42 want to support LG 4166 in MediaCodeSpeedEdit (MCSE), it's easier with two firmwares.

And the 1.00 firmware comes with a new flasher, that is maybe interesting to study/compare with 1.01 flasher, in order to have a .bin dumper some day...

Did a write test for ala42. My 4166 was flashed with a couple of experimental 1.01 firmwares and survive everytime

:

The first mediacode swap ever burned on a LG 4166

:
Fuji DVD+R 8X YUDEN000 T02 in spindle burned @12X with YUDEN000 T03 strategy.

The disc was perfectly readable after burn.

Scanned on a BenQ 1620 :

The result is average, maybe a 16X burn should be better who knows ? It was only to validate a part of MCSE, I'm not a fan of strategy changes.

I can't wait to see all the mediacodes and speed supported in the 1.01 .bin in the next MCSE (1.0.7.9)

Please Note that the firmware at rpc1.org is hbloader and this DOES NOT work with Firmware 1.01 on the 4166b and I suspect the 2166b with the 27xx Error when trying to updat from 1.00 to 1.01, however it appears to work after the 1.01 firmware is installed !!!
I suggest using the FWloadeX.exe to update from 1.00 to 1.01 or greater !!!

I disagree. My LG 4166 was in 1.00 and I update to 1.01 with the "old" hbloader in the first 1.01 zip provided by MP3Mogul.

Strange the FXloadex.exe I used was the one link posted by MP3MOGUL that worked for me while the Hbloader executable I used from rpc1 gave me the error also reported on this thread giving the 27D4 error reported by wingman 2000 in this thread. I also noticed that the drive was taking an inordinate time to recognize the drive in the bios post and when I looked at it there. It was having itself registered as a DMA2 device by the auto config in the Bios. I know since the advent of burners older NON-UPDATED motherboard bios had trouble indentifing Burner/Reader and Combo Drives. The problems I've been having are on an old Tyan MP-4M 4166. Unfortunately I used the FX loader without trying the hbloader on a ASMCM-VM and another 4166b without trouble and updated the lightscibe software to 1.4.56.1 (http://www.lightscribe.com/support/index.aspx?id=305) .
I also note that after the 1.01 loaded the hbloader software failed to error out !
Thes are obviously, low level hardware issues that can vary from machine ! My posting was NOT in anyway that someone was in error but as a suggestion that might help those who had a similiar problems that I was incurring. Thanks to MP3MOGUL for his posting of the fxl.... flasher which solved my problem ! -- Have a Great DAY !

Hi All, could use some help here. I have the gwa-4164b w/v 1.02 firmware and am trying to flash to the gsa-4166b v 1.02 but get no drive detected message, click ok and and get the loader, but it keeps coming up with model mismatched message. I downloaded the update from the LG service website, also tried the download at the beginning of this thread, same result. I did the aspi install, same results. I'm a newby, so please be gentle. Anyone have the v1.01 that I can download and run, or any other help?

Hi,

I have an LG GSA-4166B The Drive does not recognize the lightscribe cd. When I place a lightscribe cd-r it says that their is NO CD in the drive; however, when I insert a non-lightscribe cd-r, it will burn it with no problem. I am using Nero 7 ultra edition. My firmware is 1.02. Can anyone help. Thanks!!
