Well I said that it was correctly seen as a 2166 as it was recognized a 4166 before, but the issues I had with it did not disappear.

Sending you the same firmware again will not fix this.  I think I would try some different media.  You can always go to the official LGE site and download the 1.01 firmware again, and see if this resolves your issue..

I purchased the new GSA-4166B firmware 1.01 last December and have since that time burned maybe 30 DVDS  and only one using LightScribe. I have encountered an odd happening that I have never experienced before. Many of the movies I have backed up have at least 4-5 two second pauses throughout the disc. It seems fairly even. The movie pauses then continues on its own. I used AnyDVD 4.6.3.1 and the version 5. To rip I used mostly DVD Shrink 3.2 or DVD Decryptor. I burn using Nero Express OEM. I have burned well over 300 discs using these same programs on GWA-4160B and never had such an occurance. I have experimented with several media types such as TraxData, Sony and TuffDisk (Nierle) achieving the same results consistantly with the 4166B. I am running a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz machine, XP Home Ed. and 512 MB RAM with a 100 GB hard drive dedicated to DVD back-up and editing. I have not tried these procedures on home videos but plan to do so this weekend. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why there would be pauses placed in the discs? Also, they play fine on a computer and if I burn them again using them as the original via GWA-4160B the pauses disappear. I also tried these back-up copies on several stand alone DVD players new and old and achieved the same pausing results, ruling out a faulty player. Could there be a problem with buffer memory? Thanks for any and all suggestions. I plan to return the drive if I can't solve the problem.

Using a 4166 with 1.02 firmware, DVDShrink or DVDDecrypter + Nero 6.6.0.18 or 6.6.1.4, good media (Verbatim MCC003/004, Plextor TYG02/G03 YUDENT02/T03) you shouldn't have those problems (due to high PI/PIF or jitter : do you have a Liteon, Plextor 716 or BenQ to scan your discs ?).

Maybe you have a faulty 4166, this can happen with every brand...

"The Dangerous Brothers" have done some experimental RPC1 and auto reset firmware versions for GSA-4166B http://tdb.rpc1.org/#GSA4166B and other LG newest drives (4164, 2164, 2166, H10A and GWA clones).

MP3Mogul, you say in your signature that your 2166 is 1.02 ? Do you own the firmware and if so, can you send it to me ?

Thanks ItalianJob for the reply. I have been thinking about upgrading the firmware but am being cautious because I don't want this to be used an a excuse for the drive not working properly, for example wrong installation procedure, etc. I understand the good media usage but after having burned 300 discs without this kind of occurance and using the same programs as before leads me to think that there is a defect in the drive whilst burning only. I backed up the same "faulty" discs with the same drive and burned them to my original GWA-4160B. This showed no signs of the errors. So reading doesn't seem to be the problem either. These are the only two drives that I have on my system for reading and writing.

Like a few other people in this thread, I am also having problems with this drive.  I burned my first DVD (Verbatim) last night and it appears to have worked fine.  However, my problem has been with recording audio.  I tried a number of different media before I realized that this drive recommends a few specific brands.  So, I tried TDK CD-R Audio and it still did not work.  I have tried Sony CD-R Audio, Maxell CD-R Audio Pro, and Maxell CD-R (white face).  In the beginning, the Maxell CD-R Audio Pro discs worked.  Then, they stopped.  So, I tried the white face Maxells.  They worked, and then stopped.  Now, nothing works, except the DVD that I burned last night.  Is this drive really this fickle?  If so, I am done with it.  But, based on earlier reports in this thread, it's almost a whore to any type of blank media.  Someone please help me!  I'm frustrated beyond belief!

edit:  The problem is that it will not recognize the blank CD.  I put it in the drive, the light blinks for 15 seconds or so, and it is never recognized.

Would it be possible to get the zip file of the 4166B version 1.01 firmware?  I assume that is the one that will allow me to crossflash a GWA-4166B to a GSA-4166B?
