Hi everyone.. am new in this forum..

So I've got an Hp Compaq nx9010.. I didn't have any DVD writer, so a bought one.. Its a Nec ND-6500A.. But am laptop is not detecting the writer at all.. i tryed to upgrade my bios.. but still the same.. anyone knows wat should be done?? If yes plz let it be detailed.. :)

Have you installed it correctly? A friend of mine did the same but the connections on the back were not too good so he unistall it and reconnect it.

yes i did connect the drive correctly koz i dont think that it would b on if it wasn't properly konnected.. i can open the drive, put a cd, etc.. but its not detected by the bios or windows xp..

Hello and Welcome to our forum devil_mix!

From what you said....I believe you either have only power cable installed....or your drive has some serious problem!? Btw...you can open a drive, put a CD in etc..etc...also when only power cable is on....but it wont be visible neither in BIOS neither in WindowsXP that way....so please check again if both cables(power and data) are correctly attached?

Then let me know....to find other solution (but first i need to be sure that both cables are correctly installed!).

EDIT : And in case you share that IDE channel with some other device(like Hdd or another optical drive)...check that they arent both set as MASTER! Set HDD as Master and NEC as Slave in this case...or put it on second IDE channel....and if its the only drive there...leave it as MASTER!)....

My computer is a laptop.. n the drive is a slimline.. so there is only one connection.. isn't it??

Sorry...I must have had Desktop PC in my mind....but anyway....if you dont see it neither in bios or windows...and bios is up-to-date and everything....then its surely some cable problem or drive problem....btw...can you try it in another notebook? or maybe try some other cd/dvd drive in your notebook? that way you would know for sure whether its drive related problem or something else... Or maybe someone else has better idea? Please help our new member out....

You meant the drive not the driver,right?  I also believe that there is some problem with the drive...because if you correctly installed it...and your cables are also ok i presume....so...at least it should show up in bios with no problems...and since you said you have the latest bios....I really believe its a drive related problem...

the problem here seems to be either the installation process or uncompatible Laptop. Can you email HP and ask if there is any updated BIOS or they have tested that ND-6500A can be used without any problem? Other users with similar laptops can post their thoughts too

There are no cables for slimline drives in laptops..... anyway I have the HP DV1240us and it came with the 6500A drive in it, which worked fine for 4 months, and died 2 days ago.  HP sent me the Pioneer DVR K-15 which arrived today, but I've yet to test it...

I've got a new drive.. same model n this one is detected perfectly by my computer.. but when i write on a dvd the buffer really dances like mad.. is there anything i could do to stop this..??

Yes DEFRAG the hard drive EACH time before you burn a DVD.
