OK, here is what happening.  Installed NEC 3520A DVDRW yesterday by removing my non functioning CDRW, age 5 yrs in this 1.6 AMD Win XP PC.  I also unplugged my DVD Rom which hasn't been showing in MY Computer for a year or so.

Restarted PC.  DVDRW worked fine, but no Network Adapters in Device Manager so couldn't use DSL, just dial up.

Removed DVDRW, restarted, Network Adapters back working the DSL and ethernet just fine.

Put back in old CDRW.  Restarted PC.  Again no Network Adapters showing in Device--just yellow question mark. 

Turned off PC, plugged in old DVD-Rom, leaving in old CDRW and restarted.  Network Adapters back and DSL working fine.  The old DVD-rom shows up on my computer so I played a CD, works fine.  Old CDRW doesn't show up in My Computer.

Can anyone PLEASE help me on this?  I am a female senior citizen and love to learn, but this is beyond me.  Any ideas at all?

It sounds like a conflict.

I would suggest you to run in Safe Mode and unistall any drivers for your network adapter and NEC drive. Then insert the NEC, if you don't have it already, and reboot in Normal Mode. This way the OS will recognize once again the devices.
