Hi,

What's the correct driver to use for a NEC 6500A currently running on 202C to allow it to be region free? It's been installed on a Dell Inspiron 9300

Thanks and regards,

I don't think it's the driver that allows region freedom, but the firmware.

From what I've read, TDB have a version of 2.24 that does it.  I don't think you can go from 2.02C to it though.

I had 2.02C and flashed to 2.03D this morning.  Now 8.5GB DL discs my drive wouldn't touch are suddenly compatible. :)

Ok... I'm not panicing, but very close to it.

I found the 'modified' zip file 224bitset.zip from http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/6500.html which is meant to be the 2.24 firmware with riplock removal, RPC1 and media bitsetting.

Here is the sequence I performed:

1. Checked Windows System Device manager and found NEC6500A with unassigned region.
2. Dumped the original flash firmware onto my harddrive. (Original Firmware 2.02C)
3. Flashed with the files in 224bitset.zip in this sequence:
    - 224orig.exe (restarted XP)
    - 224fast.exe
    - 224rpc1.exe
4. When I checked the Device manager again, the number of changes have now changed to 2!!!!!
5. Put a region 4 (AUS) DVD into the drive. Number of changes is now down to 1....argh

Emperor, I tried your suggestion to go to TDB, but it's down at the moment.

Any ideas why it's doing this? What should I have done???

after going to 1, you won't have any problem...maybe you need some software patching too

Emperor, are you saying that the firmware should now stop updating the # of changes left? I've got both UK and AUS discs, so if this firmware is not working as it should, then the next time I pop an UK disc in, I'll be region locked.

Emperor:

Can I turn my NEC DVD+-RW ND6450A drive into a region free or multiregion dvd player?

phyko, since the firmware is region free, the times will come to 0 and nothing will happen, i don't know if you software player needs patching to allow multiple regions
