Just got an Asus DVD-E616P3 and I was impressed by this new drive.  Its not a burner, just a DVD-ROM drive.  Great for Ripping.  My first try with DVD Decryptor reached a max 16,800 KB/s or 12.2x speed on a dual layer movie.  Took about 9 mins.  This must be the fastest Ripper on the Market.  IT BEATS PLEXTOR PX-716a dvd burner. Plextor only got 13,300 KB/s. WOW WOW

One note though.

Comes with firmware V105 (above results are with V105).
I then tried the newer V106 and it went down to 1.7X speed.  May be a lock, or need better firmware.  My advice, stick with V105 untill newer one comes out.  You can download V105 from Asus if you need too.

If you have a burner that doesn't ripp fast like the NEC 3520a, then this will be a great complement to it.

Ok, Went back to V106 firmware with P3 Asus and this is amazing with DVD Decryptor for a certain movie with Agent Smith.  Now V106 works fine.  Maybe I didn't restart it last time.  See last line.

Now this is trully amazing.  Yes, this is a DL movie.  Can't wait to see a review on this DVD-ROM drive from ASUS.  Of course, not all ripps will be this fast but, a nice improvement for me.

Can you post some results with DVD-R/+R media? Does it support media quality scans with Nero cd/dvd speed?

I have a few questions if you have the time.  I don't know squat about copying movies.  and don't even have a DVD burner yet.  My brother is coming from the other coast in about a month.  I'd love to copy a few movies for him since I'm about to order a DVD burner (probably the benq1640 or the Pioneer DVR-110) if that makes any difference. 

Is there a lot involved, do I have to get a special reader or burner?  I figure he's going to look at my entire collection and only pick about 10 or so that he'd like and if it is easy enough to make copies, I'd like to oblige.  Are there a lot with copy protection that would make it too difficultt that it would be a waste my time even thinking about this?

I don't have any DVD+R available, but here's a result from Nero Transfer Test with 8X DVD-R media (remember this is a read only drive).  Again it beats the Plextor 716A.

Start       4.06X
End        9.66X
 

The link below is a review of 4 new burners.  As you can see when you check end read speed, this Asus DVD-ROM beats the 4 burners with DVD-R media.  Sorry no picture of my results, but having trouble showing a jpeg.

www.dvdr-digest.com has written a nice guide to back up movies.  You need 2 programs, DVD-Decryptor and DVD Shrink.  They seem to be the most popular.

This should be all you need except for a dvd-burner.

Yes.  Use DVD-R disc, as they seem to have the best compatibility in dvd players (non-pc)

i think that benq dw1620a has 12 or 14X with DL media (patched firmware)

From the Asus website, it doesn't indicate DL support. Are you saying this drive reads DL media?

I have a Sony drx-720ul that is capable of DL burning, though to be honest I doubt I'll burn many DL disks. However, it would be nice to know I could dupe a DL if need be, so I would like my rom to be DL compatible.

BTW,  the asus drives seem to be the only ones that support udma100, which may be part of the reason why you can rip so fast.

167 is a DVD-ROM, which I used to own, and with 9S19 hacked firmware can read DVD-R/+R and DVD-RW/+RW up to 16X! DLs for 12X
