The only difference I see is that Plextor has up the CD/RW speed to 32x and 2MB Buffer!

Looks like these are different from the PX-716A too:
- DVD+R DL is up to 8x (up from 6x)
- DVD-R DL is up to 4x (down from 6x???)
- DVD-RW is up to 6x (up from 4x)

Also it looks like the PX-740A doesn't support VariRec or PowerRec...

There are rumors on other sites and forums that it is a rebadged BenQ DW1640... We'll have to wait and see.

Plextor's website says it's a bargain drive, it will not come with plextools pro, it only has a 2mb (plex 716 has 8mb).

Looks like they are trying to get into the "cheap" market and make money like the rest.  We'll have to wait and see if it's a rebadged BenQ.  I was at Circuit City today and the new BenQ was the same price as the Plextor 716A!  Geeze that went up quick!

Wouldn't be the first time... I think one of their DVD-ROM drives is rebabdged and one of their first DVD+R drives was also.

I don't think I want to subscribe to "Hear-Say!"

Yes i start also to believe that its a BenQ drive, but on the other hand how Plextor can compete other manufacturers? When the drive hits the market we will find out from the used chipsets

Hey emperor, if evidence is produced its NO longer "Hear-Say," it becomes a matter of FACT!!! A shame on Plextor for succumbing to that!

The PX-504A was in fact a NEC-ND1100A and the PX-605A was a Matshita SW-9573.

Also the Plextor DVD-ROM drive the PX-116A is a Pioneer drive.

Plextor will have to do what it takes to stay alive in this market.  BenQ makes a quality drive for the price... I know, I have one.  I prefer my PX-716A to it because of DAE, but the BenQ is no dog when it comes to burning DVD+R's...  Not trying to start a war here.  You can't pledge absolute allegiance to any one firm.  I used to love Yamaha drives -- where are they now?

If this is true we sould at least be happy that they are rebadging a very good writer. Can you think the possibility of rebadging  Lite-Ons? They really have to do something to lower their prises. This reminds me of Teac. They were using Sanyo chipset until CD-W540 and then they switched to Mediatec for lowering the prise. We all know were Teac is now . Lets hope this won't happen with Plextor.

Well I agree in part with you, but the mediatec chipset had nothing to do with the quality of the drive, moreas, poorly designed firmware and bad engineers have resulted in their demise.

I Don't think this will be a rebadged drive, I think it will be a genuine Plextor drive, just without Plextools Pro, and with an 8MB buffer that the 716A has.

I'm not convinced they wouldn't -- but not disagreeing with you at the same time (if that makes any sense)...

If I were a Plextor executive, I might consider a partnership with BenQ or Phillips and re-badge their drive for a more mainstream market.  BenQ is pretty darn successful in the DVD recorder market and the Plextor name might attract someone looking for just that as well as an more affordable solution.  Both companies would benefit from it.

That's a pretty interesting idea, but would both companies have the willingness to share the GLORY?!

Sure, take it on the flipside... Your a BenQ executive and Plextor is interested in rebadging your drive with their name.  Plextor is arguably the biggest name in optical storage and they have enough respect for your product to put their name on it... That's a hell of an investment.
