I recently purchased an NEC 3520A dvd drive. I have never updated firmware before whether official or hacked. I would like to update my current 1.04 firmware to the new official NEC 3.04 firmware.

Should I back up my existing 1.04 firmware (using a program such as binflash I think)? Is there any reason to do this?

I may in the future try hacked firmware as I learn more about the reasons for doing so and gain confidence that the firmware is reliable.

It is always a good idea to back up your old firmware before flashing to a another.

Even if you're just using the official firmware? Do people do this in actual practice?

The simple answer is probably not. Most people will probably just download the latest firmware and update to that.

With that said, please backup your current firmware using Binflash. There is a repository of pretty much all the NEC firmwares at ScorpioSoft's page.

Just backup your firmware and compare the .bin file with corresponding one on his page. The checksums should match. You can use Quikee's NecDump to do the comparison.

The latest firmware will enable better (hopefully) writing speed, checking the NEC sticky threads at this forum will give you ideas why should or not update the firwmare

Thanks ;I used it and it worked but..... I noticed that when returning to the original firmware (because the modified firmware wasn't what I expected it to be) the indication of my NEC ND 3520A was changed into NEC ND 3520AW .... do you know what that "w" means ?????
