sense ? nec 6500a dvd/cd drive . i can't burn any dl dvd's , 3 dif brands tried none work . will firmware upgrade help ?

I'm in the same boat as you. My 6500a won't burn dl, but it works fine for anything else. I've tried most of the different firmware versions, didn't do me any good. Does your drive recognize DL media? What happens when you try to burn DL?

I use the Verbatim 2.4x Dual layer media without any problem.

I thought that using verbatim would be the solution after finding the media compatibility chart on the nec website, but I had no luck with that brand either.

My drive is a 6450 with upgraded firmware. I want to know how it can still work perfectly fine, recognize DL media, but not burn it. Is the QA of these drives poor? I've read alot lately about people having problems and having to return for replacements? Did get one were the DL capabilities are hooped? or am I missing something?

I'm not sure about the quality of the 6450 drive, but the quality of the 6500 is superb.

the 6450 is the same drive as the 6500 with different firmware. it is an oem drive. Mine is in a compaq laptop. There is a thread describing how to upgrade to a 6500 by flashing the firmware. I did that, it worked (or was "succesful"according to binflash), but I don't have the ability to burn DL disks. I am looking for some advice on possible fixes for the problem

I just flashed from 2.02C to 2.03D (see the official firmware thread here for download links and make sure to use BinFlash to backup first) this morning because I couldn't use any DL discs I bought yesterday. Problem solved!

2.03D didn't fix my DL burning problem, still can't burn! Anyone out there with a newer compaq laptop that comes with a 6500, what firmware does your drive come with?

I'm using Liggy's 2.24 firmware and it's fine.

That's all well and good, but CAN you go from 2.03D to 2.24? I don't think you can. If I'm wrong, please let me know how it's done! :p

Yes, you just need the .bin file to do it and use WinFlash........ very very easy...

I've tried 2.24 and it doesn't give me DL burning. Do you have a compaq? I know they ship laptops now with DL capabilities, and I'm sure they must use the same hardware as mine, so I'm wondering what firmware is on board.
