Now I need a bit of help. I just got a new laptop and it has a NEC 6500A drive in it. The firmware on the drive is currently 2.81, but this firmware is newer than what is posted on NEC's webpage. Anyone have any ideas?

Mogul, how about backup your current firmware and send me a copy?

I sent it to you. You stated that 2.24 was the latest? If it's numerical wouldn't 2.81 be the latest that was released on 3-27-2005? I'm not sure, or are you talking about Hermie's hacked bitsetting firmware?

check the 6500 thread, it has all the binaries, the latest is 2.24 among with 2.N0

Sorry, I´m new member in this forum, I´m spanish and my english is not so good, please be patient with me.

I have a Fujitsu-Siemens laptop with a NEC 6500A (firmware 2.40). I´ve intented burn a DVD+R9 or DL of RICOH manufacturer but I couldn´t. I´ve said this is a compatibility problem whit someone manufactures. I think it´s correct because I bought a DVD DL of Verbatim manufacturer and it burns ok.

There´s some firmware that increases the compatibility whit more manufactures? (i.e. whit RICOH and this DVD DL doesn´t will finish on trash without be burned).

Thanks and sorry for my english. I´d like an urgent response.

Hello, I have nearly the same problems with that unit (specially writing DVD-R media, when I read one I've burned It has bad sectors). I'm also spanish so maybe it could be the same model (Amilo M 7405). I read another post from other spanish who have the same firmware as me (2.40) and the same problems, he solved them sending it to the vendor and they replaced it because some models where reporting this problems.

I'm going to upgrade the firm to 2.24 and if it doesn't fix them, i'll send the laptop to the vendor to have it repaired.

Buenas, tengo mas o menos el mismo problema con esa unidad, y ademas tambien al grabar DVD-R xq me graba algunos sectores mal y luego no puedo leerlos. Quizas tenga el mismo modelo de portatil q tu o mas o menos parecido, el Amilo M 7405 y he leido en otro post de otro español que tambien le daba problemas y q lo mando al servicio tecnico y se la cambiaron xq resulta que ha debido haber una tirada de estas grabadoras que han salido mal. El posteo hace poco y mi portatil ya tiene 5 meses, asi q no se si el mio tendra el mismo problema. Tengo una firmware 2.40, voy a probar a actualizar a la 2.24 (que en verdad es mas reciente, al parecer llevan una numeracion distinta para portatiles o algo asi :S

Cuando lo pruebe y eso volvere a postear con los resultados

Hello yermet, I suposse you're spanish too, but I'll continue with my prrrrfbllllrr english. I've hope response from emperor.

The model of my Amilo is M 1425 (very similar and almost exactly equipped that yours). I suposse too that your problem is like mine, recording DL DVDs plus DVD-R too (thought this is not my problem). I've only required information about firmware that increases compatibility of "virgins" (not f2cked..... I means ) DL DVDs, because only Verbatim vendor seems compatible.

Your problem seems diferent.... I wouldn´t upgrade 2.40 firm but sending laptop to Fujitsu-Siemens, I sent mine because the keyboard don't works and they replaced the motherboard, but after they saw NEC 6500A faults and replaced it too. My NEC functions right now, therefore our problem must be in the NECs included on our laptops and not in firmware. I hope I've helped you.

I REMEMBER, I NEED A FIRM, IF EXIST, THAT ADMIT MORE VIRGIN DVDs R9 (DL). THANKSSSS

Mi Amilo es M 1425 (muy similar y casi exactamente equipado al tuyo). Supongo q tu problema es como el mio cuando grabas DVDs de doble capa ademas de DVD-R (aunque yo no tengo este problema). Solo pedi informacion de firmware q aumentara la compatibilidad de DVDs de doble capa "virgenes" (********) ya q solo parece admitir Verbatim.

Tu problema parece distinto.... yo no actualizaria firm 2.40 sino q enviaria el portatil a Fujitsu-Siemens. Yo envie el mio porque el teclado dejo de funcionar y cambiaron la placa base, pero despues vieron fallos en la NEC 6500A y tambien la cambiaron. Mi NEC funciona bien ahora, por ello, nuestro problema debe estar en las NEC incluidas en nuestros portatiles y no en el firmware. Espero haberte ayudado.

RECUERDO: NECESITO UN FIRMWARE, SI EXISTE, QUE ADMITA MAS DVDs R9 (DL). GRACIASSS.

I finally changed the firm and now it's working fine. Now it doesn't 'burn' bad sectors.

I didn't read well your question and I didn't answer your really problem. I don't know which firm you have, but in my case I have (now 'I had') 2.40, and with it according to NecDUMP 1.2.3 I can 'only burn' the ones from the manufacturer MKM (maybe it's from Verbatim). With the firm 2.24 It recognizes also from Ricoh, Ritek, Prodisc and Philips. And not only with DVD+R9, the list of DVD compatibles in DVD-R, DVD+R... has increased

Al cambie la firm y ya no me graba los DVD's con sectores dañados.

Con el problema q tenia yo que estaba totalmente ofuscado, no lei bien tu pregunta, asi q ahora ya te la contesto bien. No se que firm tendras ahora, yo tenia una 2.40 y con esa, segun el NecDUMP 1.2.3 solo reconocia bien los DVD+R9 manufacturados por MKM (que es posible q sean los Verbatim). Pues con la firm 2.24 segun el dicho programa me reconoceria tambien los de Ricoh, Ritek, Prodisc y Philips. Y bueno, la lista de DVD's compatibles aumenta tambien en el resto de clases (DVD-R. DVD+R...)

Espero serte de ayuda, si tienes algun problemilla sigue posteando, que ya me voy enterando de como va esto a pasos agigantados jeje.

Has dado en el clavo de mi problema. Tengo la 2.40 y solo me permite DVD +R9 de MCC (Verbatim), y yo quiero mas fabricantes (tengo un RICOH (algo mas economico q no quisiera echar a la basura.
Si me dices q la 2.24 admite mas marcas me cambio el firm ya.

Me has servido de mucha ayuda y si no te importa ayudarme un poco mas, me indicas donde consigo la 2.24 y los programas y el proceso a seguir para la actualizacion? Please?

Well, I did it by my own risk.
I' found a compressed file named 224bitset.zip, including three embbebed upgrades in the binflash.exe of each one and a readme.txt saying .....

NEC ND-6500A 2.24BT Riplock removed and RPC1 Firmware

Included files

224orig.exe - Added support for booktype setting
224fast.exe - Including riplock patch
224rpc1.exe - Including riplock and RPC1 patch

Book-Type setting allows for setting the Book-Type of a +R/+RW and +R-DL DVD disc to DVD-ROM.
This improves compatibility for some older commercial players.

Rip Lock removes the rip (reading) speed limitation,
(usually set to 2X) on a DVD Video with CSS encryption.

RPC1 removes region checks and commands.

Therefore I execute each one (it seems work fine) and my DVD DL media of RICOH vendor burns ok. Althought changes of region continues saying 4 (like before) but I don't mind. I don't know what means rip lock remove issue . Someone can explain tome?

Perdon por no haber contestado antes, pero tengo lios en la facultad, ya a estas fechas me andan apretando. Soy 100% Alcorconero (de Madrid, al lado me celebran el FestiMad : DD) asi q me enteraba perfectamente en español jeje

Pues te explico, has metido un parche NO OFICIAL (que no es cosa mala vaya) que sirve para actualizar el firm de la unidad, al igual que hacen los oficiales y a su vez elimina dos limitaciones de las unidades de DVD, el "ripeo" de DVD-Video a 2x al disco duro y la limitacion de zona que tambien llevan los DVD-Video. Lo unico que a esta limitacion de HARDWARE de las zonas se le añaden las dos que quedan de SOFTWARE, una que es windows y otra que es el programa que uses para verlos (POWERDVD...) Si te interesa hazmelo saber y te lo explico.

Entiendo lo de la facultad, tb a mi me pasaba hace....... 20 años (dios q viejo!!!!!!!!!!!)

A mi me interesaba no tirar mi dvd virgen ricoh a la basura y lo he conseguido, las otras dos limitaciones eliminadas, pues no se si las usare, supongo q si uso el dvd decrypter o shrink si lo utilizare (quiere decir q estos programas iran mas rapidos?). Lo de la region creo q no lo utilizare y ya te digo q sigue poniendo 4 cambios....
De todas formas veo q me ha activado opciones en cuanto al book type, q no entiendo muy bien lo q es ni como deberia de ponerlo para cada tipo de disco (no sea q luego no pueda reproducirlos en un dvd de sobremesa).

Si no te importa me explicas las dos limitaciones de Windows y programa de reproduccion, aunque mi interes no es verlos en el pc sino en el dvd de sobremesa.
