After the CeBIT 2005 show, we had finally both the firmware/software to test the newly PI/PIF scanning features of the well known NEC ND-3500A. Lets start first with flashing the drive, the firmware is 2.R8 and we used the latest Binflash...

Here is some info about the un-released firmware (please don't ask for it, wait for the official release):

We used a TY 8X+R media to create a test disc

Nero CDSpeed 3.75 supports 1X/5X/8X/12X and 16X reading speed options for DVD Single Layer discs. We used the same media for all reading speeds, and comparison matrix can be found below:

You can get all the results from the link below. As you can easily notice, the scan speed does affect the reported PI/PIF values. We can say that the 5X and maybe the 8X could be used for fast scanning, since the reported PI/PIF error rates are very close. What is rather strange is the ECC interval of 7ECC blocks. According to some information, we could set the scanning interval from 1ECC up to 8ECC, so results could be compared with LiteON drives (1ECC) or BenQ (8ECC). As currently stands , Nero CDSpeed offers only the 7ECC option.

Below is an example of the PI/PIF scan from the 5X CAV speed:

Thx for the info emperor, great post!
Must remember to visit CeBIT next year to grab some "hot" firmware!
The "example of the PI/PIF scan from the 5X CAV speed" you posted looks quite diffrent from those I've seen over at Freaks, is that because of the 7ECC interval? Will that be "corrected" with a new version of Nero CDSpeed or the 2.R8 firmware?

Actually the firmware came one day before we lleave for Germany, the software wasn't ready

If you download all the tests, you can see the differences between the various speeds. As currently stands, with the 7ECC, i cannot compare the NEC PI/PIF results with other drives...i think that CDSpeed will support too 1ECC, but maybe with a newer version
