I have been playing with a copy protected audio disc (Celebrity from NSync) and found out some interesting stuff.

- I can extract audio tracks perfectly with my Plextor 40x and Plextor 12/10/32, but my other drives fail to recognize the disc.
- My stand alone Panasonic CD player refuses to play the disc.

So:
1) I can make copies of the disc with the copy protection removed
2) My audio cd player cannot play the original disc
3) So they are forcing me to use a copy of the disc even though I paid no less than 20 Euro! (about $18.5) for the original CD.

I'd say that's not really a good copy protection :(

You donīt need a plextor for copy audio protected cd.......
The Teac cdr 55s ( scsi ) and Teac cdr 58s ( scsi )make the "job"
very fine with a very , very simple trick...:-).

You need either a drive that can read such CDs or install CDFS.VXD

Ok...first sorry 4 my bad English...:-(
You have 2 "tricks" one for "Cactus" and another for "Key"
First put the copy protected cd in your CD Player ( Stand Alone )
and look for the TOTAL TIME !! 74:20:00 ( for example )
and remember the time !!.
insert the CD in your Teac and start CDRWIN ( I have version 3.8.f )
go to th option EXTRACT DISC/TRACKS/SECTORS
Click on SELECT SECTORS
Go to the option SECTOR SELECTION and write this :
START = 00:02:00 and END = the TOTAL TIME !!! 74:20:00( for example )

RAW = On
Error Recovery = Ignore
Jitter Correction = Disable
Subcode Analisys = Disable

The last step:
go to IMAGE FILENAME and select the location where you will save
the IMAGE of the CD.
Click on START and wait you will get very big WAV file without HEADER
but is not a problem !!!donīt try to play the wave because it DON`T WORK !!

last step :

Start WinOnCD select AUDIO CD and load the WAVE
click ( right button ) on the wave and select EDIT
you will see ALL THE TRACKS OF YOUR CD !! and if you play with the
ZOOM function you can see the 2 seconds pause between the songs
look for a free place and click again with the right button and
select INSERT TRACK or something like ( I have the German version ).
repeat the last step for all the songs, after all the tracks are
"marked"...burn the cd... DONE !!!
I have tested this way with
TEAC CDR 55s ( SCSI ) Firmware 1.0R and
TEAC CDR 58S ( SCSI ) Firmware 1.0P and it work 100% !!
If you can burn with this method let me know and I will explain the second way I found !!.

Lokito.

And more about......

I got a Cdrom reader ( really old !! ) the TOSHIBA XM-3401TA ( SCSI )
manufactured JANUARY 1993 !!! and....it work !!! really !!!.

The CD I have tested was "Bravo Hits 35" ( Germany ).

Also...I think ( Iīm not sure ) every SCSI can do the job !!!.

( again sorry for my poor english, I come from Spain.. ).

Are you referring to the Cactus protection?
It does not work with the NSync CD (I think it's protected by key2audio).
CDRWin disables the Start button because it cannot read the TOC.

I have found another drive who can rip the tracks just fine: LG CED-8120B.

Remember Cactus isn't good enough to detect which protecion it is since there are 3 types:

CDS 100 - The famous one with incorrect TOC can be read with most good SCSI models (TEAC,TOSHIBA) and all Plextor drives.
However plextor has a small advantage. What it the CDS-100 protected disc has tracks that fade in and out of each other. For this the only option is the plex I think or it will take much work for a perfect rip ?

CDS 200 - The one whith distorted sound blocks just like safeaudio. This one can be copied with the cdsf.vxd thingie
CDS 300 - Unknown what it does but it should be out there. Rumoured is that this is a test version of cds-300 which will let you rip all.

2nd there are a few other protections
key 2 audio - no problems on the plextor drives from what I have heard.

Mediacloq - The famous protection on Charlie's Prides discs. It is hard but it should be able to copy it with Teac and Plextor drives other drives aren't reported/tested yet.

EAL (CDS-100+ dissimulator) - No drive can rip it correct at this moment but then again this protection is really incorrect. (If you want this one real hard and incompatible then put it on a cdrw. The only thing that actually could play it perfect was my discman made by philips. But then again it has digital out so It still can be ripped perfect.)

Safeaudio - just like cds-200 use cdfs.vxd

SCMS id - Serial Managing Copy Ship identification . This is a protection which causes problems on most audio cd recorders. But not on the PC ones.

However CDS-100 and EAL do also cause many problems with normal cd players.

The only thing that has been reported to copy most are the plextor drives.

Thankīs a lot for the reply and so much information !!

well, the only thing I can do, is wait until I get another cd
with diferent protection :-(.

Another thing :

I got a copie of MAX PAYNE ( make with CloneCD )and I used
the same methode to ripp...and it work ! but...
the first ripp was wrong because in both cd I need a cracked
exe to play the game...so I will try to find the original cd
to test if it work and if I find something new I will post here.

UPDATE

How to recognize the protections.

CDS-100 - On the cd self it is stated that the disc is protected
CDS-200/CDS-300 - On most cases on the back Midbar is mentioned
Key2audio - The cd contains the DADC logo in the inner ring just like Securom.
Mediacloq - Mediacloq logo on the box
Safeaudio - ?????
So what do we know now. Well with these info a collection of protected discs can be made used for testing. Because from each protection one disc is known now.

CDS-100 -> Best option is emulation to EAL
CDS-200 -> Right Said Fred - Fredhead (Midbar mentioned on the back)
Mediacloq 1.0 -> charlie Pride - A tribute to James Reeves
Key2audio -> Heather Nova - South
Safeaudio -> Volumia - Puur

Now I would Like to know from Gigasurfer if the the Nsync discs contains the DADC logo and John I also would like to know if the cd u used for the testing contains this logo.
Oh and by the way the plextor 40x can read anything. This drive just doesn't seem to care what is in te sectors and what you want to call it. This means that it will backup Mediacloq 1.0 easy as one of the only players that can do it. And because of this really good reading system it might also copy EAL with dissimulator anyone tried?

For all the Lite On 24102B users there is some good news.
It seems that the new firmware + with the new clone cd can make back ups of cds-200 disks. Now they still need to fix CDS-100. And then the plextor will have zero advantages. So Lite On is realling to do there best these days.

Hi All ... (a newbie to This forum, but not to ripping ;))

I Tried to copy my Madonna's GHV2 CD, that appears to have some sort of copy protection?. Using CloneCD, It made a nice coaster, with some clicks. I'm currently only using a Yamaha CR2100E, shortly to be upgraded for the 24x10x40 Plextor.

I Grabbed the rc-MP3 ripper-mod of the web, dropped in the included CDVS.VXD, then looked at the CDA contents, all is well different :) I just clicked stereo/16bit/44100/*.WAV etc and copied em all to a temp dir and burnt the 'new' CDA from there @16X using Nero 5.5.6.4 all is wonderful ;)

A very nice mod :)

Steve
