I pick up a Khypermedia 48X24X48 model #KHCRW482448 with seamless link burn-proofing, free after 2 separate rebates. I wonder if anyone knows who make it?

I too am wondering who the actual manufacturer is. I e-mailed them to ask what OEM's they use. I haven't actually installed the drive yet to find out what firmware and drive name it has, maybe that will tell more. Either way, for $0.00 after rebates, you can't go wrong!

If yours reads ATAPI CD-RW 48x24, then it's officially a BENQ and probably comes with the D.LC firmware like mine did. You can download the latest D.SC from from www.benq.com.

But according to Nero InfoTool, my firmware revision is C.CZ
hmm.. i wonder who makes mine?

The firmware on mine is C.FZ. D.LC may be a newer version, what is the date on your firmware? My drive is made in February, 2003 and made in Malaysia. I bought a Cendyne last week from Officemax for $10, it turns out to be a BENQ 4816P. The look of the front panel of this drive look quite different from the Khypermedia drive. The tray opening is taller and so is the hole for manual ejection.

I bought 2 of the drives at the time, one had the D.LC firmware and the other the C.FZ. Download the latest software and try the upgrade. They have checks in place to make sure you're flashing the correct drive. The drive is definitely a BENQ, and I'm pretty sure that the firmware c.fz drive is still a 4824P model. It is the only 48x24x drive they have on their site and it would be illegal for them to sell a 48x16 drive when a 48x24 is advertised. Just make sure the the drive listed says ATAPI CD-RW 48x24. You can always backup your firmware using MTKFLASH before applying the fix. I've actually flashed mine to the 5224P model using it and both mine work fine, but that's another forum.

Quickly take the 4816P back and get a 4824P! Its nice that they are free after rebates but you should be getting the 4824P. Both of my 4824P's were made Jan 2003, you might check and see if the 4816P has that on the label, if it was made before then, you probably got a 4816P that was packaged wrong by mistake...

O.K. here's the scoop, the C.xZ and the D.xC (the x's are letters that differ by manufacture date/firmware revision) firmwares are both BENQ drives. The D.xC series is the 4824P model based on the mediaktek chipset, which can easily be flashed using the MTKWINFLASH utility with the bin of a 5224P model, you may also be able to use the firmware upgrade from their website, I don't know because I used the mtkflash method. The C.xZ series is based on some other chipset, most likely Ricoh since it's really the only other available. I have found that you can download the 5224W firmware right from Benq's website, should be the ffz firmware, and flash it to this drive to give it 52x capabilities. Both my drives function perfectly and have tested to write at 52x speed. I hope this helps everyone!

The 5224W firmware (revision F.FZ) seems to work flawlessly with my KHypermedia drive, it also handily "overclocks" my drive to a nice 52x24x52 too. Not bad at all for a free generic 48x24x48 drive!

Seems like everyone is rebranding BenQ these days...

OK, now i am interested! I am glad you guys found out what was going on... I looked at the FFZ.exe and saw the work ricoh in there and it was about the same size file as my Aopen drive which is also a ricoh. I have had much better luck with my aopen compared to the BenQ. I wonder if their ricoh based BenQ drive will also be better? Heck since there free, why not try it? I was at OfficeMax yesterday picking up the free SpinX 50 CD-R pack and looked at one of the Khypermedia 48x drive boxes. It said right on the outside "4824P". Did the ricoh based drives say that on the box? Or did they say something like 4816_? Please let me know... thanks

Just flashed my 4824 into 5224W with F.FZ.EXE and it worrks. So far, I make a copy of a diskful of pictures (689Mb) in 2.48 sec disk to disk. Thanks for the suggestion! This drive is also mt. rainier compatible as identified by Nero CD Tool.

I also got a Khypermedia from OM. I want to OC my drive but I am not sure what model you guy talking about (for who suceed in OC like Michael Lee and etiRkca)

When you post your results, please post where it "Made in" and your original firmware version. It is nice if you include what method and firmware you used.

I went back to officemax and started looking at the boxes. khypermedia is like cendyne, they mark the model number and installed firmware number on the side of the box. I picked up the on that said "KHCRW482448" and revision "C.CZ" I hope that is what is really in the box. I have not been to happy with my BenQ 4824P so far. It is very picky about the cheaper CD-R's, especially Khypermedia brand! again thanks for the info... :-)
