HKao -> RE: NEC's BookType utility offer (7/21/2004 6:05:17 AM)

I know the BookType setting on +R media improves the compatibility with
standalone player. But, what is the downside/drawback of DVD+R --> DVD-ROM hack compared to real DVD-ROM when played in the standalone player ? shorter life span on laser pickup head ? Any possible disadvantage ?

Maily I use DVD burner to backup DVD movies and authoring DV-shot life films for my family, friends, and company. Only seldom I use it for computer data backup.

Recently I'm considering upgrade my two-year-old Pioneer A04.

If NEC WON'T OFFER THAT UTILITY in the future nor any one make that utility, I'LL SURELY EXCLUDE NEC OUTSIDE OF MY BUYING LIST NO MATTER HOW CHEAPER IT IS just because it cannot fulfill the requirement when I spend money for DVD burning, i.e. no BookType utility will cause the user in uncertainty and make the user risk to spend more money on media.

NEC should offer this utility among with other manufacturers like LG/PLextor/Pioneer!

Guest -> RE: NEC's BookType utility offer (7/21/2004 11:36:07 PM)

Maybe NEC is thinking like and urge the end-user :

"For movie/film authoring and backup, why not just use -R media, it's still cheaper than and more compatible than +R media.

"For computer data backup, you don't need BookType setting."

Another reason why NEC is not so willing to implement the BookType Setting either in firmware or as standalone utility, is that she belongs to DVD Forum standard and not willing to help any +R-related one.

Alternatively, NEC still can unofficially or do under-table to help some
programmer to develope the utility. This is for her goodness to prevent the sale drawback and soothe customer complaint.
