Many thanks, Paradan!

Some confusion I hope someone of you could clear it up for me:

Why isn't ASPI-layer driver included in Windows 2000/XP? This tends to cause too many troubles to interacting with SCSI-based periperals.

Besides, does only Adaptec develop ASPI? How about other SCSI vendors? Do they provide free ASPI drivers?

best -> RE: Cure the ASPI Problems with the Philips PCRW804 (1/1/2003 3:50:46 AM)

I am asking this because I saw Nero also releases its own version of ASPI layer for free download.

Not sure if it is compatible with Adaptec's version, which seems quite predominant in CD rippping/recording programming.

@ best

I hope the firmware update worked! A few words to your questions. ASPI is a standart that Adaptec developed for their SCSI Drives. It is used to communicate with the drive. The smart thing about it is that the Driver(that was developed for SCSI) also works with IDE drives. In Win95/98/ME the ASPI Drivers are really nessecary for the SCSI Drives. In WinXP/2000 they were no longer necessary, because WinXP/2000 uses SPTI(SCSI pass through drivers)instead. So this might be the reason why Microsoft does not deliver the ASPI Drivers any longer. By the way there is only one developer of the ASPI standard, but there are several "projects" that provide alternative ASPI drivers. So if you want to you can take an aternative ASPI driver too. Hope I could help you. I hope there are not too many speling grammar mistakes in there;-)

Greetings

Paradan from Germany

@ best

Oops I meant "spelling/grammar mistake". I just saw your second post. I know NERO has own ASPI drivers, but if the Adaptec drivers work I do not recommend trying the Nero drivers. Very often mixing ASPI drivers causes problems because the previous version is not removed comletely. It is not WinXP that makes trouble(because it does not need ASPI) but it is the software(Burning software etc.) that "forces" you to have ASPI installed(because it uses ASPI in Win9x/ME and so it wants under XP too).

Paradan, thank you so much for your prompt response and prefessional advice. I really appreciate your helping me out of the headache. The only thing I lack is the "aspifix" at this point. I dug into google and found nowhere from there. [^]

It seems nobody is taking care of the broken link pointing to the aspifix. Could you email me a copy if possible at all? Thanks a lot!

Hey best
It is not a case of nobody is taking care of the broken link pointing to the aspifix !!![:(]
The problem is to find someone to host it for me as the traffic is very heavy no matter where I put it and it slows servers down to nothing and I don't have the spare time at the moment to e-mail it to everyone who wants it but as soon as I get it online (Which should be soon )I will post a new Link !!! [:)]
But to stop you moaning I have just e-mailed it to you LOL !!! [:D][:D]

Laffin Assassin -> RE: Cure the ASPI Problems with the Philips PCRW804 (1/5/2003 6:08:56 AM)

Being the Guy I am I will e-mail the ASPI FIX to anyone who needs it but please don't e-mail me for it just put a request in this thread with your e-mail address and I will send it ASP !!! [:D]
I will have it on-line and ready to download very soon !!! [:D][:D]

best -> RE: Cure the ASPI Problems with the Philips PCRW804 (1/5/2003 6:14:34 AM)

Thanks, I got it!

Please do not get me wrong at this. I thought you might be on holiday vacation and the server was beyond your control. Besides, I did not expect it to be in such a greet need! I hope something could be done to feed every request of the cure. Thank you!!

Laffin Assassin -> RE: Cure the ASPI Problems with the Philips PCRW804 (1/5/2003 6:20:32 AM)

No Problem Mate I will have it on a good server very soon !!! [:D][;)]

Hello, everyone!

Armed with Paradan's advice and Laffin's little patch, I have broken it through finally, without a hitch! My solution turned out to be somewhat of a combination of what they have been suggesting.

Run the ASPIFIX Laffin has put up online, reboot, and finish up with the official FlashTool in the compatibility mode of Windows NT 4.

Other compatibility modes would NOT work on my system. I guess the reason might be that the ASPIfix Laffin provides is in version 4.6, most friendly with Windows NT 4. After being forced into Windows XP, the ASPI layer can be naturally detected only when functioning as under Windows NT 4.

I hope my experience could help those who have failed even with Laffin's patch.

Laffin Assassin -> RE: Cure the ASPI Problems with the Philips PCRW804 (1/5/2003 9:08:34 PM)

I am sure it will !!! [:D][;)]

I just upgraded my computer from Win98 to Win2K. Now, my computer will not recognize my cdrom and cdrw. When I try to add the hardware, the computer will not detect any of those drives. Would upgrading the ASPI fix this problem?

I have a Compaq Presario 5000 Model 5WV280.
CDROM = Compaq CRD 8402B
CDRW = Philips 4801/71

The patch I have got is a lot easier to use and it Does work on any version of Windows including XP And after you have applied the patch you can upgrade your ASPI with Adaptech's own Aspi anytime if you need to.!!! It has already helped loads of other Philips users and it may help you look at :-

And make your own mind up and it does work for other brands of CD Writers with the same problem !!!
But as I say please post a request in this thread.
All you have to do is unzip it into a folder on your hard-drive and follow the Instructions in a txt file in the folder and it should hopefully sort your ASPI problems out!!!

I Have now put it online so you can download it just go to :-

The ASPI FIX link is working I have just double checked it and it is not a Website it is a direct Link to download it so I don't understand why you are having problems but the fault is at your end unless the server is busy !!! [:)]
