john -> ASUS 40x -> 48x...? (6/20/2002 11:49:49 PM)

I know that many users wanted to know if an ASUS 40x/12x/48x can be overclocked to the newest 48x/16x/48x. The answer is no!

The firmware updating went ok, the drive recognized as CRW-4816A but either in CD Speed or in Nero cannot start write (holds at 4%).

I checked and both the 40x and 48x have MediaTek chipsets (different revisions) that's why we tried the OC in the first place.

As it seems LiteOn users must be quite happy with the small gifts from LiteOn

PS. The 4816A overclocked drive went back to 4012A without any problems and so far seems working ok.

This is quite obvious because the 16X ReWrite of the 4816. A newer chipset would have had to have been used to offer rewrite speeds higher than 12X. Just the same for the Lite-On LTR-XX125X series... It 99% also *CANNOT* be overclocked to the 48166W/48246W, because the 16/24X ReWrite technology wasn't supported in those MediaTeK chipsets at the time of release. Now the chipsets are avaliable, and companys such as Lite-On/ASUS are utilising them to their potential.
