Session time out?

Whats it mean when my session has timed out and I need to log back in? And how do I stop it, because I was writing a very long and slightly useful message then it happend.... it was horrible.... oh.... the pain.... sorry, I'm not trying to be immature It's just my way of saying I'm annoyed but that it's okay, I don't mind, etc
