kortik, yes the IODATA player is very good, i assume if you visit www.iodata.com will have some kind of links to online stores for the USA residents, the same device will start sold at Europe under the Plextor brandname...I hope the new firmware to further fix some problems we noticed, and support .srt subtitles [;)]

That IOData use a Sigman EM8620L chipset
The Philips 642 use the ESS Vibrato II

I was going to buy Philips but after seeing and reading your review I am stuck

Can someone guide me to pro/cons of those chips
Better RW/FF, subtitle support, post processing, higher bitrate support, Qpel/GMC, etc

is there any info on that?

thank you.

kortik, unfortunaly, we haven't tested the Philips 642 player, i would suggest looking over www.doom9.org there are some threads where people talk about Philips dvd players, i can say that if you look closely at whats not supported by the IODATA player, and if thats not very important to go and buy it, its a good and solid device
