Don't know how to delete this message otherwise I would. I have found the answer after a good second look. So I will answer the question myself.

I have read through most messages concerning this subject, but I can quite see how the update process takes place. Would anyone be kind enough to describe the steps necessary to carry out this upgrade?.
Answer: Get the P2.2 CVT firmware file. Get WinDWFlash software. Run WinDWFlash. Open the P2.2 firmware file. Flash the Firmware. Cold boot PC (turn off, then back on). No use latest P3.4 firmware. Drive should now be a DVDR1640P.
I also like to comment that I have used DVD-RW 2x Princo in this recorder with version B3.2. And the result was that it wrote to them at 2.4x and disc could only be used that time. After that disc was not recognised by any DVD-ROM drive. Must say that I've got a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4082B with firmware A208 from the "famous brothers" and that correctly records at 2x these discs, and they work more than once.
