A new version of the 4160B's firmware is out, According to LG improvements include better +/-R 8x media support and improved RW writing quality. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the long awaited booktype setting function has been added.

I read the instructions... but... if you've already put on A302, you have to downgrade the firmware to A301 before applying A303...
Am I reading this right?

Users at other sites have reported applying A303 on top A302 does work. That part of the instructions is very strange to provide a new firmware that adds functionality yet makes it available to only the fraction of the users base who hasn't upgraded to A302.

So A302->A303 won't work?

It's reported to work and there's no reason why it shouldn't. The reason why this is even a topic at all is because in the info accompanying the release is this statement:

quote:

This firmware update is for drives with original firmware versions below A302.

Of course if this was in fact true it would be rather useless to release it in the first place since people would bother to update firmware would have installed A302 already.

I have my LG GSA-4160B in a USB external enclosure. Does anyone know if its safe to flash the drive?

The instructions provided by LG state "Connect the drive as ¡°master¡± by it self, on the secondary IDE controller with no other device on the same IDE cable".

Thanks
Jake

If you have media on the improvement points that isn't being recognized or being burned at specified speed then by all means upgrade. If everything works fine the way it is just stay with A302. Actually, by date, A303 is only two weeks newer than A302, it's just that LG decided to release it much later for some reason.
