Yes, I agree it depends on drive and media. However, one can take a random, even relatively crappy cd-r burner and almost marginal cd-media and still get away with it. The resulting disc will be usable. With DVD discs, once one strays away from Pioneer/BenQ/Nec/LG(/latest modified LiteOn or Plextor to some extent), the results can be completely unusable, even with quality media. So, _on average_ cd-r media burning still produces disc of usable quality more likely than dvd burning. That's my take at least :)
