Hi

I am using the special edition firmware from TDK, v2.C8SE on my NEC3500. I have noticed that playback of burned movie's on a DVD+R (verbatium mcc003) is at full speed and not at the slow speed of a proper dvd-rom.

I have read that bittsetting dvd+r to dvd-rom will allow the disk to be recognised and played back at dvd-rom speed, but the v2.C8SE should stamp the book type dvd-rom automatically, as a feature of this firmware.

The dvd+r's do play back fine on a consumer dvd player, but I don't understand why playback is at full speed on the nec 3500, yet the booktype was burned as dvd-rom. It just makes watching movies on dvd+r 3500 too noisy as the drive is spinning fast most of the time.

Is it to do with the auto bittsetting in the v2.C8SE firmware? Would another firmware that allows bittsetting to be set manually be better and play back dvd+r slowly? How do others find it?

thanks
Richie

Ignore me! Unmouting the disc, ejecting and putting it back in again and playback was fine, at normal dvd-rom speed on the burned dvd+r. I think I must have been playing the disc back straight after the burn and possibly the drive thought it was still a dvd+r and played at full speed.

Hi

Actually I have the same thing happening again. Playback is just too fast and noisy with DVD+R burned with DVD-ROM booktype against a regular DVD-ROM. I have tried slowing down the drive,

/sbin/hdparm -E 1 /dev/hdc

and using
echo current_speed:1 > /proc/ide/hdc/settings.

This is the output below of an example piece of DVD+R. The disc is recognised as DVD+R, but it shows DVD-ROM booktype for DVD READ STRUCTURE.

Any ideas? Does the same thing happen in Windows with this drive and DVD+R media?

Richie

So you don't have the same noise all the time, do you?

Yeah thats right, the drive spins up to a fast speed and you can hear it, it then goes off, spins up, goes off, spins up throughout playback. Whereas a proper DVD-ROM runs all the time, but quietly, presumably at single speed. Whereas I reckon for DVD+R with DVD+ROM booktype, the drive is reading at x12 or something.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Sometimes I get the same but it is a media issue.

Anyway NEC reads both SL DVD-ROM and -/+ R media at the same speed.

Thanks, reassuring you have this too, though mine does it all the time. What dvd+r media do you find works at single speed, or is it temperamental across all dvd+r? I'm using Verbatim mcc/003, which I thought were good. And actually some verbatim discs did play at single speed and no longer do it, seems inconsistent. The same discs work fine on a consumer dvd player.

I don't have many SL DVD-ROM, but tried one and yes it does the same thing, the drive spins fast. So only proper DL DVD-ROM plays at single speed for sure? I'm really after the slow quiet spinning of DL DVD-ROM, but in a DVD+R. Any DVD+R media you would recommend do this?

Appreciate your help.

Cheers
Richie

Your media are very good.

I always use TY media because I can find them easiest and cheaper.
