finally, I got tired enough of Philips support and I have crossflashed my Philips PBDV1640P with BenQ B7P9 firmware. Now it works better than ever before (better writing quality, tested performing readability test on burned media) and its led flashes red again when burning. If the test of firmware 2.4 it's good enough, maybe I'll crossflash it to be Philips again.
But I'm pretty sure that BenQ's support works faster and releases more updates. Probably my drive will be BenQ forever...

Hi everybody!

I bought this drive a week ago and I found which, for me at least, is a problem. I think it's a good drive burning DVDs but the problem is that I can't burn CD-R at a speed of 4x or less. With my old burner I used to record CD-R at 4x when I record to be loaded in my PS2 or if it was a Music CD. But now, with the 1640P I can only burn at a minimum speed of 8x (In Nero in example) and my Playstation takes a long while to load the discs recorded in that way and my CDPlayer doesn't charge the MusicCDs recorded at 4x speed.

What can I do to solve this? May I return the drive to the shop and buy another one that writes at 4x speed? Does the last firmware (2.4) solve this?
I have read "Improved writing on 4x (low speed) CD-RW media" in the features of the new firmware but it's 4x speed to the CD-R too? Can anybody that have upgraded the drive with the new firmware comfirm me this?

Does the Benq last firmware solve this?

Thank you very much!

P.D: Sorry about my english.

Thank you chesko.

I have upgraded to P2.4 and the slowest speed to burn CD-R is 8x too. Maybe I will change my drive to another that could burn slower.

Hallo All !
I am, btw I was werry happy to own Philips DVDR 1640P afther reading this reviews, but since I bought it, I have a problem with burning, at begining I had Firm. P 2.0, and I had many writing troubles with DVD-R at 4x, I hoped I will resolve this problem with P 2.4, but afther reflashing it to P 2.4 with original Philips software it goes nothing. The drive writes at 4x or 2.4x / it was not possible on the old. form ), full DVD, but at end of the disc it writes an unredadeble error, at all madia when I controlle it. Ist sthis firmware problem or defected hardware ??

Can enybody help me... ?

hi all,
I have purchased recently this PHILIPS 1640P and, through this forum (tnx a lot!), I have updated firmware to the version P2.4.... but still remain some serious problems.
In the next update (P2.6?) should correct the difficult recognition of the supports DVD-R 4x 8x....!!!!! The drive doesn't recognize almost brand of dvd-r (Taiyo Yuden dvd-r 4x.....)
I think that this defect has remained from only to correct, for the rest it seems me a good drive, also in reading, very fast and precise.
I would be very thankful if someone told me how to resolve this defect, waiting for the new firmware.

Thanks to everybody

Thank you for the firmware updater!!
Now the drive (Philips 1640P) with the last available firmware (P2.5) slightly seems improved.
I have gotten some other improvement with Nero Burning Rom updated to the version 6.6.10,
especially on the selectable speeds of read/write.
However a scarce reliability remains with some brands of DVD-R.

We hope in some further improvement.

Thanks a lot!

Hi all. Nice forum. I was wandering if you could help me with a small problem: i've flashed my PBDV1640 drive with winflash, the retail and Benq version of the firmware, to try to solve some instability issues but it turns out to be a hardware problem. What i need now is a PBDV1640 firmware so i can flash it again as bulk version and send the drive back to the store. I have the retail firmware, what i need is the bulk. TIA.
