here's the problem, my 6500 gets recognized as slave instead of master.

I am guessing that this is a BIOS problem since the old drive was setup as master and the 6500 gets setup as slave and not only that, but PIO mode as well. I saw that BigHardy reflashed the drive to change the master/slave settings and I was wonder how to do that, may then I can get the error to go away and get UDMA. I have a Toshiba Satallite M35, don't know if anyone else has a similar config and found a solution for this problem.

Hallo sensei88,

what version of 6500 do you have ?
Original-Version 2.2x (Cable-Select) or flashed to 4.21 (reverse-ATA) ?

In my Gericom the 4.21 will be detected as Slave but if i enable DMA in Windows, Windows will hang on Startup.

In my Toshiba Satellite 2800-600 the 4.21 will be detected as Master and works fine with DMA in Windows.
The original Version 2.2x will produce a IDE-Error #1 by a Biosmessage and is also not detected by Windows.

Greetings

Bighardy

Well we have a good friend that sends them over, nec official website updates are rather slow...

Do you have a chance to get the software or parameters to flash the 6500 back to original (Cable-select) or to Fix-Slave-Mode ?

Greetings

BigHardy

I will try it:

In fixed-Master-Mode the drive will identify as master and takes also control about a perhaps present slave drive on the same Ide-channel.
In fixed-Slave-Mode the drive will identify as slave and needs normally a present master drive on the same ide-channel.
For this behaviour special signals on the cable are not interesting.

In cable-select-mode the position of the drive on the cable defines the function of the drive.
This will done with a signal on the cable (i believe 47 on slimline drives)
In reverse-ata-mode the drive identify exactly reverse to cable select:
In case that cable-select "produces" a master drive, the same signal on a reverse-ata-drive produces a slave.

I hope what i know is correct, but when not please don't kill me.

BigHardy,

The drive came shipped with 2.22, and then I flashed it to 2.23 hoping that would correct some of my problems, but it did not. I still get a IDE Error #2. Where can I find 4.21? Also if I do flash it to 4.21 and it is not detected by windows, is there a way to get it reflashed back to 2.23 and how stable is the 4.21 firmware?

Thanks,
Sensei88

@sensei88

My 6500 came also with 2.22 but he produced an IDE Error # 0 (I believe) and no drive in WinXP.
After flashing to 4.21 there was no error by bios and works with dma in WinXP.
I made ca. 10 DVD ( 5 Imation-R 4x , 5 TDK DVD+RW 4x) and have checked them on a BenQ-drive, 2 Nec 2510 and a Pioneer-DVD-Slotin-Rom with no problems.
I used Nero CD-/DVD-Speed (filetest / Surfacetest).

But: I have not found a way to reflash back to original version.
I reflashed the 2.22 but a gericom now needs a very long time to detect the drive.
This was not with the fresh delivered drive 2.22.
And a normal executed 6500BOOT.bat says: "Already new Software"
I think the update-disk will not flash only the main-flash.
I think the 6500BOOT.bat is flashing another flash which cannot be restored by binflash or Nec6x00A.
That's the reason why i asked emperor for the parameters or software.

The flashed version 4.21 is working in a Toshiba Satellite 2800-600 and alsi in a Satellite 4000CDT.

Greetings
