I need to update the firmware for my MSI 4838a drive from plain dos, but i am running windows xp so how would i go about getting into plain dos. I tried windows 98se boot disk but it doesn't recognize the drive, could this be an ide controller (HPT 370) related issue or is there some other "plain dos" that will allow me to see the drive.
Thanks, Matt

Most dos flashing utilities, or even windows flashers, support only native IDE controllers on your motherboard (first 4 drives). IDE raid controller or add-on Ultra DMA are not recognized when you boot up from the floppy drive due to limitation of dos. You must move the drive to be flashed to the onboard IDE controller at least temporary for it to work. You don't always have to do it from dos, MTKWINFLASH works within Windows, even XP.

I'n new to all this and not very technically minded - sorry.
Can somebody explain in simple terms how I go about updating my Firmware.
I've just installed an MSI MS-8348 CD-RW drive which has a firmware version of 120D.
On their website I've noticed that the latest version is 150D.
It also says ....
"Execute "update v150D.bin" under real DOS mode. "

I'm running Windows 98, so what do I have to do after I've downloaded the file from their site.
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_list.php?part=5

Thanks

Assuming you're talking about 8348A, download the 8348a_150d.exe, run it in Windows it will extract 3 files:
150D.bin
Update.exe
Update Bios Procedre.doc

Copy the first 2 to C:\
Restart your computer in DOS mode
Type: Update
Hit the Enter and confirm the question with Y, Enter.
Wait till process is finished, it might take a minute or 2.
Reboot.

hi i have a MSI 8348A cdrw which originaly came with 120D firmware.
I began to have problems with writing to 4x CDRW media (which used to work fine before on this drive)

I upgraded to 150D firmware (from the MSI website) and now I cant write CDRW or CDR at all with Nero 5.5.10.28!!

Does anyone have any ideas? or know where I can get 120D firmware to re-install?

Please help.Thanks
