After opening a Command Prompt window, type "E:" (without quotes) and hit Enter; this will change the window prompt to "E:\>". Next, type "dir" and hit Enter to see the dir output on the screen. Finally, type "dir >c:\files.txt" and Enter; you won't see anything on the screen, because the dir output will be redirected to the file C:\files.txt. Open the file C:\files.txt with NotePad to see its contents. Next, play with the various dir options to get the output format you like best. Note that C:\files.txt will be overwritten each time, so you may choose other file names for different options and discs (e.g., C:\disc1.dir, etc).
