Can anyone tell me how to get a print/list of the picture titles that i have recorded to CD? They are mostly .jpg. Windows XP. It would be useful to have a printed list of what is on the CD. I use either XP recorder or Nero latest.

It's much more simple! Open a command prompt window and type dir > lpt1 or dir > c:\list.txt

And you have your list!

Hmmm. Thank you. I am almost there, but there are obviously other things that I must do because nothing happens whrn I enter those commands in the Command prompt window. Do I have to add some sort of address or just havethe relevent file window showing on the screen?

Simple go to the folder/drive you want to print out. E.g. if your cd-rom drive is e: then open the command prompt, type "cd e:" and then type "dir > lpt1" if you want to print it directly or "dir > c:\list.txt" if you want it edit before printing. You can get different types of listing with dir just type "dir /?" for help.
I hope could help you!

there are also some "switches" you can use.

/on = order the files alphabetically
/b = if you only want to know the file names
/s = list everything in the subdirectories also

example of usage:
dir /on /b /s >files.txt

just do: dir /?
if you want to see all the options

Thanks but still cannot get past the prompt which is as follows:-

C:\Documents and Settings\Bill Bloggs\_

Is that correct?

Then I add:-

cd E:dir>C:\list.txt
cd E:>C:\list.txt
dir E:\dir>C:\list.txt
dir>C:\list.txt
etc. None work.
Always comes back to the C prompt above. CD drive is E.

Any ideas, please?

After opening a Command Prompt window, type "E:" (without quotes) and hit Enter; this will change the window prompt to "E:\>". Next, type "dir" and hit Enter to see the dir output on the screen. Finally, type "dir >c:\files.txt" and Enter; you won't see anything on the screen, because the dir output will be redirected to the file C:\files.txt. Open the file C:\files.txt with NotePad to see its contents. Next, play with the various dir options to get the output format you like best. Note that C:\files.txt will be overwritten each time, so you may choose other file names for different options and discs (e.g., C:\disc1.dir, etc).

One last question. I can now list the files on the CD. But how can I list the contents of each file? One CD has 1 folder on it, so the listshows one item. Can I open the folder and list the individual pictures?

Yes! type "cd foldername" and then "dir > c:list.txt"

You should look up the basic dos commands!

Best regards:

Thanks. Yes I have been reading them but they are a bit difficult to understand when the end result does not seem to relate to the command.
Who would have thought, for instance, that to stop your computer, you press 'start'? It is a learnt behaviour, not intuitive.
Learning by trial-and-error is about the most inefficient system there is.
A tutor to ask is better.
Thanks again.

see my message above:
dir /s
will display all files including files in subdirectories.
