Oh Mighty Emperor,

I flashed to V2.27 and DVD+R (SL) is reading as DVD-ROM. (works fine in my Toshiba DVD player now) But...is there or will there be a firmware update to allow DVD+RW bitsetting to DVD-ROM? (NEC ND-3500)

Thanks for the firmware! I thought I'd pass on a bug I encountered when trying to install this firmware on an ND-3500AG installed on a machine with an AMD dual processor motherboard. This board has two PCI busses in it: one a 64 bit 66MHz buss 0 and a 32 bit 33MHz buss 1. The firmware download fails while running this machine under Windows XP. It did load properly while running Windows 2000. I have had trouble in the past trying to load firmware onto a HP dvd215i (Ricoh). I had to put that one into a different machine with only one PCI buss to get that one upgraded. The BIOS on these AMD machines also resides on PCI buss 1 which is attached to the AMD 768 South Bridge. These boards go bonkers when a Creative sound card is installed also. I thought I'd pass this on in case someone else has trouble with this.

Actually, the ATA controllers are attached to the 32 bit, 33MHz PCI buss 1 located on the south bridge AMD 768 chip. I'm guessing the problem has to do with the buss numbering. What mystifies me is why does it work under Win 2000 and not Win XP. I would guess that the updater is written in C. Sometimes some of the compilers have switches that can be set to optimize them for certain classes of processors or other circumstances. Since this action is happening at a real low level, there may be some routine that takes device and buss numbering into consideration. The HP drive I mentioned in the previous post wouldn't update under either Win 2000 or Win XP in either of two different PCs with MBs that have this AMD chip set with the two PCI busses, but worked when I put it into a PC with a standard buss set up. I wonder if people will have trouble with some of the new PCs with dual Opteron MBs that have split PCI busses.

Hmm ... you know how the Win flashers always tell you to reboot Windows after flashing? Do you really need to do that? I always do just in case.

Hmm. 2.17 still burns Ritek R03 as only 4X argh. And my big stack of CMC 48X CD-R's will only write 32X - What's the point of a 16X drive when I can only burn at 4X ? What media are others using?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but does the 2.17 firmware of the nec 3500 supports book type with DVD+R SL ? And please, can you tell me if the official firmware is the best if i want to burn movies on DVD+R?

No the official v2.17 doesn't support booktype for DVD+R media, you need to use either 2.27 or 2.C8

I have a dual AMD & the same problem. It says 'updating' and the drive light blinks forever...
Thought i was pooched, but i rebooted & the drive still works
Is moving it to another machine the only way around this?

This maybe a problem with the specific motherboard, you can try to use binflash DOS, http://binflash.cdfreaks.com
