Hi,
I did not have all your problems, I searched for a firmware to fix my maximum 24x problem. I could only burn at that speed with certain cds and only burn at 10x for the rest. I used the dangerous brothers rpc1 firmware upgrade. If you use the e112auto, you take the risk of destroying your drive, but for me it fixed everything. When I play dvds, I can barely hear the drive running. It recognizes all cds and burns at 24x. Try at your risk.

Like mbd2885, I was having problems with my Compaq Presario's (2800T) GCC-4240N. I had flashed many times with the Dangerous Bros Auto 0111 firmware, which worked fine, but didn't solve increasing problems. The worst problem I was having lately was the mounting inability of the drive to erase my CD-RWs, in some cases just resulting in a whole lot of rumbling noise. So I bit the bullet and did as mdb2885 did, flashing to the Dell-specific Auto version E112. Lo and behold, things are much better now. I successfully full-erased a CD-RW and then burned it at 10x. A Nero Drivespeed test shows my CD-Rs burning at an average of 17x and peak of just over 24x (if I understand this correctly). So far so good. If anyone's had any experience with other firmware being used on other manufacturer's systems, please post the results here.

New followup. Now I think my drive is just going bad. No matter what firmware I flash, the drive is noisy and won't blank or write to CD-RWs that I can still use with an older PCMCIA-driven rewriteable drive. Oh well.

Hi All,

I have the same problem as many here, my HL-DT-ST re/dvd GCC-4240N on a Compaq Presario 900 series will happily read DVDs but will not read CDs.

I tried a lens cleaner (the only thing suggested by my support) with no improvement. I don't understand firmware and what it does, i downloaded the zip file from
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=15&manufactor=16 but I am a little nervous of opening it after reading the disclaimer, can anyone either walk me through what exactly i need to do, i.e. do i need to install it in a particular place or carry out any particular instructions.

Or does anyone have any other specific advice on how to fix this problem, there seems to be a hell of a lot of different pieces of advice depending on the model.

Alternatively, i have looked at buying a new one of these, and i am finding similar products between £30 and £300 and just don't know what i am looking for and why the prices vary so much and if i do buy a new one, can i just take the old one out and stick the new one in and it will work??

Thanks very much for any help you can give.
Emma

Well I have purchased this drive seperatly from the laptop, and I dont think any firmware is laptop dependant,
I hate it on my toshiba satellite pro 4600, and I have firmware 0T05 on the drive.

i had this problem with my GCC-4240N in a compaq presario 1516us just recently, i followed somebody's advice and it worked.
1) set cdrw drive on dma.
2) upgraded firmware, using The Dangerous Brothers' firmware version 0111.
http://tdb.rpc1.org/#GCC4240N
3) defrag.

but still when i try to erase a CDRW using nero 6, i get a write error. right now, I'm erasing using a school desktop computer, LITE-ON COMBO SOHC-4832K and roxio 6, it works.

according to howstuffworks, it takes 600 degrees C to turn the cdrw's material into liquid(blank), and 200 degrees C to turn the material into a solid(non reflective-data).

ok, i found out that the cdrw drive is stuck on Multi-word dma mode 2, that might be the problem, i remember it used to be set at ultra dma mode 2.

ok, instead of using firmware version 0111, i used E112, and now the secondary controller is now automatically set at Ultra DMA Mode 2. I haven't burned with a different brand of cdrw, so i'm going to look into that. and i haven't burned with a cdr yet to see how reliable the drive is. it used to have a write error once in a few discs. for my next post, it'll be a conclusion.
