I bought one of the bare bones 2510A drives and used the NEC software to upgrade the firmware to
2.16, using MAM-A DVD-R 4x Media I only see a 2x burn option available. HELP.
The drive "confirms" that it is running the 2.16 firmware.

Yes that is correct, try using other media, the NEC 2510A is rather strict with most media, unless you are using a hacked firmware

Just a reminder, just because you spend 10x the regular price of media on a DVDR, doesn't mean it's 10x the price!

I'll try to post some scans of the NEC 2500a running 1.07 firmware burning a MAM-A 4x DVD-R at 2x (max speed for me as well). It should be pretty similar to your expected results. As a warning ahead of time, don't expect anything impressive

all scans were done for one disc only, which is a MAM-A 4x DVD-R burned at 2x(max) in my NEC 2500a running firmware 1.07 (unhacked).

The media should be quite usable under any conditions I would think... but at the price, the fact that it only burns at 2x makes it pretty lousy compared to Taiyo Yuden which is cheaper and better quality (and faster!!)

(and yes, I do almost always run 8 or so tests on every disc I burn for quality reviewing....)
