Taken from NEC's website

Seems that its identical with NEC 2.06, DVD-ROM for DVD+R DL media and G05 at 8X -R

ND-2510A - What will be changed with firmware 2.16?

The DVD+R medias below will be recognized with firmware 1.07, but be informed, they won`t be added to our list of recommend medias, because there is no guarantee for optimal burn results and performance. Also there will be improved DVD+R9 compatibility in cooperation with new release of Nero ( www.nero.com )

DvD+R9 ( Double Layer)
2,4x Ricoh

DvD+R
8x BeALL
4x MPO 8x
4x MBI 8x

DvD+RW
4x OPTODISC
4x SENTINEL
4x NANYA
4x MBI

DVD-R
8x CMC
8x TDK(NEW)
8x RITEK (G Type)

DVD-RW
4x OPTODISC
4x RiTEK
2x DAXON
2x PRODISC
2x PRINCO

Download here

Information from zip file:

-this Update works only with NEC ND-2510A (retail&bulk), not with OEM releases. (OEM means part of a full PC package or external USB/FireWire variant of this burner) For OEM products contact your dealer, distributior or manufacturer of PC/ USB package.

-You can only update from Firmwareversion 2.15.
(you can verify firmware with NERO Info Tool: http://www.nero.com)

-it is recommend to login as administrator under Windows XP/ 2000

-disconnect all external USB / FireWire devices.

-do not turn off power during the updating process.

-before updating pls. deinstall all packetwriting softwares.

-Warranty will be lost during false updating procedure (especially modified firmwares were used before).
We (NEC) cannot guarantee correct updating, if "modified" firmwares, e.g. "herrie.rpc1.org"
or "etna.rpc1.org" etc., were used before, it is true such "hacks" offer a recovery function,
but their manufacturers had only assembled firmwares (NEC will never release original firmwares!),
so YOU WILL NEVER HAVE THE SAFETY THAT YOUR DRIVE HAS THE ORIGINAL FIRMWAREVERSION AGAIN!
In such cases we could not offer you a solution any more. You have to repair it by cost then.
******************************************************************************************
INSTALLATION

-after unzipping file pls. double click on "K251GN60.exe", follow instructions.

-*pls. close all other applications during update procedure.

Here is the BIN file, which can be used to flash ND-2510A drives from pure DOS!

I flashed it in windows today.. all went well

Ritek G05 is now indeed recognised as 8x instead of 4x

I'm still waiting for NEC to support the Traxdata dual layer disk (RITEK D01)

I have an NEC 2510A bought as an oem item, ie. barebones burner without extras with firmware version 2.15 from Ebuyer. The announcement from NEC states that oem versions are not upgradable ie part of full PC package. How can I tell if mine is upgradable without risking a trial flash? Anybody tried it yet with one of these?

I imagine that the NEC windows flasher won't flash external drives! Only way would be to install drive as internal and use the DOS flashing method

You are absolutely right... there 's no way to flash external devices with dos or windows drives... i 've tried too many times with my burner but no luck...

Flashed my OEM/bulk 2510A (true 2510a, not an upgraded 2500A) to 2.16 using the official firmware linked above. Works ok based on my quick preliminary testing (i.e. reports 2.16 as firmware being active and burns cd-r/dvd-r ok).

i made some checking on this 2.16 firmware version...

The recording strategies of this firmware are exactly the same as 2.06 firmware.... Also, the media support list is the same...

So, there is absolutely no difference between the 2.06 and the 2.16 version...

It seems like NEC releases two types of firmwares.
2.0X firmware series for OEM's and 2.1X firmware series for all the rest... But you can apply any firmware series, no matter the drive (OEM or not)

Using the latest DVDInfoPro, i change the default booktype setting for this drive... without applying any hacked firmware.
WinBType works as well...

Unfortunately, these programs works only with DVD+R DL discs...
haven't tried the nero option though... will check on it an get back to you

for your info, here are the writing strategies in both 2.06 and 2.16 versions:

2.06:
CD-R version: 1.15
CD-RW version: 1.14
DVD-R version: 1.34f
DVD-RW version: 1.27f
DVD+R version: 1.34f
DVD+RW version 1.25f
DVD+R9 (DL): 1.15f

2.16:
CD-R version: 1.15
CD-RW version: 1.14
DVD-R version: 1.34f
DVD-RW version: 1.27f
DVD+R version: 1.34f
DVD+RW version 1.25f
DVD+R9 (DL): 1.15f

I have applied 2.16 version to my ND-2500A (1.07 version) with no problem at all... (dos flasher provided by emperor)

For users having external enclosures... there might be a way to flash your drive without having to make it an internal drive for flashing (with a modified windows flasher i am working on)... I 'm looking into it now...

I could not get DVDInfoPro v3.16 to set the booktype to DVD-ROM for DVD+R disks. (no dual layer). Were you successful in this? What other program should I use to set the booktype for this drive if I am not going to use the expensive dual layer disks and just stick with the DVD+R disks?

Thanks!

You can only set the DVD-ROM booktype with DVD+R DL not DVD+R
