I have no idea (as I live in Atlanta not Milwaukee - any longer that is.... ;)). I was searching for the drive and that came back in the results... If anyone finds this drive in-stock, I want to buy one today!

Even the Yamaha online store still says pre-order.... I would rather goto Best Buy or CompUsa (or any other store) so if I have a problem, they can take it back.....

Anyone know when it will hit store shelfs?

I emailed them yesterday, after a trip to the store. Seems my local store at least (maybe all of them) have pulled the yamaha line from it's shelves (THAT SUCKS!). I asked them if they would be stocking the new drive, I will post when they respond to the email.

So they are still ramping up the production!?!?!? So I wonder if that means we will not see them in retail for some time or what?

I am really stuck between the TDK 48x16/24x48x (really a Liteon I think) and the Yamaha F1.

The Yamaha has some cool features (tattoo, etc...) and I would guess better quality burning (over TDK, Liteon), but the issue I need to know is about if I don't burn with 44X CDR's then the burn speed goes down to 16(?)??? Will they fix this or will it stay low (I have a alot of blank 24X CDR's around here to use). Also, Plextor will be coming out with a 48x2448x at some point and I have had very good luck with Plextor (wish they still made the SCSI though).... Any thoughts?

All the Issues you are asking about the Yamaha cannot be answered untill we have the retail version ! But usualy with Yamaha they do cure their problems before they are released think on, it is not the finished product that John has tested they gave it to him to find the problems and I am sure they will cure them once they know what they are so all I can say at this moment is don't worry (Yet)wait and see what the Retail Version is like and if it is half as good as the 3200e you will have no worries

Just to clarify the situation, when using 24X CD-R media, the drive will automatically adjust to the specific settings appropriate to the brand and model of the media you insert. We have 7 engineers dedicated to media testing. The results they get are put into a database which the OWSC references when selecting the appropriate speed for the inserted media. If you insert a 24X media in the drive, the drive will begin recording at 19X and ramp up until it achieves the highest reliable recording rate for the inserted media. Your 24X media could be recorded at 24X, 28X, 32X or greater all depending on the quality and reliability of the media at each recording speed.

Well then, I think I am sold on the Yamaha drive. It has "cool" features, and Yamaha seems to take great care into customer service (and response - read above)....

Probably, the next recorder we will see from YAMAHA would be a CD-RW & DVD+R/+RW recorder, end of this year, 1Q next year

The real question is the specs....
I already have a Pioneer A03 and a TDK 24x (looking to upgrade to the Yamaha 44x)... Until the DVD-R/+RW combo drives start to go at least 4x writing along with 40+ CD writing I don't think I would look at upgrading the DVDR...

Is there anywhere I can find a "roadmap" of new drives that are coming and approx when?
