Thanks to mkimmer for his procedure. I successfully flashed my 1632 to a 2040 last night. I did first try the downloadable package supplied by this site, but it failed. So I tried mkimmer's procedure. To show my appreciation I've written an idiot-proof version: Firmware upgrade procedure for flashing an AOpen CRW-1632 to a CRW-2040 _______________________________________________________________________ This procedure has been successfully tested flashing an AOpen CRW-1632 containing firmware v1.03 with the firmware v1.01 intended for the CRW-2040. The drive is now identified as a CRW-2040 and enables CDRs to be written at 20x. Carry out this procedure at your own risk. 1. Create a temp folder somewhere on your hard drive. 2. Download firmware upgrades from the AOpen site <http://www.aopen.nl/tech/download/Optical/default.htm> for both the CRW-1632 and the CRW-2040. Save them somewhere safe (not the temp folder). 3. Run the 1632 executable downloaded in step 2 (1632_f103.exe). Click OK at the first dialogue box. Click Setup at the second. The setup program will have now extracted a binary image and a flash program to a temporary folder in \WINDOWS\TEMP named e.g. WZSE0.TMP. The exact location may vary depending on your set-up and operating system. The image file will be named 16x_103.bin and the flash program RFlash440a.exe. If necessary, search for the filename listed as the Source File in RWFlash. 4. Copy 16x_103.bin and RFlash440a.exe to the temp folder created at step 1. 5. Close the RWFlash utility started in step 3. 6. Run the 2040 executable downloaded in step 2 (2040_f101.exe). Click OK at the first dialogue box. Click Setup at the second. The setup program will have now extracted a binary image and a flash program to a temporary folder in \WINDOWS\TEMP named e.g. WZSE0.TMP. The exact location may vary depending on your set-up and operating system. The image file will be named 20x_r101.bin and the flash program RFlash440coa.exe. If necessary, search for the filename listed as the Source File in RWFlash. 7. Copy 20x_r101.bin only to the temp folder created at step 1. 8. Close the RWFlash utility started in step 6. 9. Run RFlash440a.exe from the temp folder created at step 1. 10. Click OK at the first dialogue box. Click Setup at the second. 11. Select the Target Drive you wish to upgrade from the drop-list. 12. Select 16x_103.bin as the Source File. 13. Click next but NOT start. 14. Go to the temp folder created at step 1. Rename "16x_103.bin" to "ignore.bin". Rename "20x_r101.bin" to "16x_103.bin". 15. Now click start. 16. Watch the Information panel and Progress bar. When completed successfully, shutdown and power off before re-starting. If this procedure fails, try again ensuring you have followed each step carefully. If necessary, flash back to the original v1.03 firmware intended for the drive. NB Keep the firmware upgrade downloads as the may be useful when AOpen makes the first upgrade available for the CRW-2440... They may make the flash utilities more intelligent by then, to prevent this sort of thing. But if you already have them... ;-) MarkK 4 October 2001 -- MarkK
