I have a good quality avi in ratio 16:9. When I use Nero to convert the file and then make vcd to play on my standalone dvd player, the quality is great for the first 10 minutes and then deteriorates rapidly from then on.
One good thing is that it will maintain the 16:9 ratio. If I convert the file to mpeg, Nero will not maintain the ratio and converts it to 4:3.
Am I doing someithing wrong or is this a nero problem?

I, too, found that the quality of avi to vcd in nero deteriorates very badly - and I can't even get the 16x9 aspect ratio. If you find a way to fix it, please let me know.

I converted the avi to mpeg with TMPGen, and it was really good with no deterioration. I recommend it.
But I still cant get Nero to keep the aspect ratio right on my tv. It is wide screen when I view it on Windows Media Player though.

I was going to sugest TMPGEnc myself. I have had good luck with this one. As far as the ratio it should be the same as whatever you set in TMPGEnc. Make sure that you have to correct setting there.

Visit www.cdrtimes.net too. Another great place....

I have made other vcds with Nero and they have had the 'wide screen' look. When I play the vcd with windows media player it looks great, but on the tv set it is 4:3. I have tried adjusting the dvd settings but it doesnt make any difference

Well us TMPEGnc is a good way to convert the avi to mpeg and then burn it with NERO but I find the best way is to find a capture program that copy directly to MPEG

I found that in TMPGen,
Go to advanced settings>
Video arrange method>Full screen(keep aspect ratio 2)

Source aspect ratio>4:3(pal/ntsc)

By doing this, the wide screen look is maintained in Nero
