In general, as a rule of thumb, the optimum speed for recording is one close to the max available. This is because recorders are optimized in firmware for this case. However, due to the scarity of 8x DVD-R discs and the various problems with 4x media, I think it is required some sort of personal investigation by each user, according the brand of its recorder and the projected type of readers. After Mitsui stopped to be involved itself in the manufacturing process of discs, I would try TDK and Taiyo Yunden. Please also take into account to what our moderators are suggesting.
